Default ? about vw,transmissions

My daughters 97 vw jetta isnt shifting from 3rd to 4th.she tells me this late last nite.so i go out to check the fluid,well i cant find any place to check the fluid or to add more. now i am a pretty decent backyard mech. but have never come across this before.so my ?is whats up with that!!disposable tranny when its empty throw it away?

It is a automatic yes. There are two differnt types of trany's in these one has adip stick one doe's not. so there is no dip stick it must be checked by a pro.

What we do is there is a plug in the trans. pan we pull it out and we hook up to the cars computer to moniter trans. temp we add fluid at a certin temp tell it starts to come out of the plug hole. Thats it in short. Not fun

ok i see now.sounds like you are a mech.are there vacumn issues or other not so expensive things that could make it not shift right?

Well yes and no it sounds like it could be a shift silnoid these are computer controlled. and would have to be diagnoised by a pro. We work on alot of vw but we are in portland.

thank you.now i no what i have to do. last year it cost me $3500 for the tranny on my dodge pu.ws starting to worry about this vw.hopefully it will not need a rebuild even if it does hope its not 3500!!! thanks again. bm-fisher

Another way of making customer's come back to the dealer and be over charged. Sell it by a car you can do the services on and know it's been done right.
