Today I decided to brave the high muddy Columbia near my hometown. Got the dekes set at the early hour of 8:30. Shortly thereafter I had 2 hooded mergansers swimming in the dekes. My old lab was driving me crazy wanting to get out of the boat and get at em. I let em swim off. Not to long after that I get 3 mallards to drop in 80 yds short. I softly quacked and got them to swim a little closer. They stayed short of the dekes for about 15 min and then they lift off and fly right over the dekes right at me. I pull up on a big greenhead and splash one, swing for #2 and hit him twice, watched him and he swung behind this grove of trees and looked like he was going down in the main channel. After the old dog retrieved the first one I fired up the motor and went to get #2. Could not find him, motored around for about 15 min and he just disappeared.

I hate losing birds. Anyway here is #1 and the only bird of the day.
The reason this bird is special to me is that my old dog doesn't get out to hunt as much as she used to and it's nice for her to get this kind of bird to retrieve. Also, it's the second largest mallard I've ever shot. Some ducks are like, great another mallard. This one is like, that's a nice duck, BIG greenhead and double curl tail, and a magnificent representation of it's species.
