Re: 308 norma mag
AlwaysFishin,
I have been reloading for the .308 Norma for about ten years. I have had great results using 180gr.Partition slugs over 70gr. of IMR4831 or 71.5gr.of H4831 powders, for use on elk, moose, and black bear. This load produces just over 2900 f.p.s. in my rifle. The Nosler Ballistic Tip in a 165gr. has been very accurate medacine for deer and pronghorn (yes I actually drew tags once), when loaded over 72gr. of IMR4831 or 70gr. of IMR4350. Both of these loads produced around 3100 f.p.s. or better with excellent accuracy. I have also used Vihta Vouri N-160 powder to a lesser degree but with very favorable results. This load was 66gr. of N-160 and the 180gr.Partition slug. Velocity in my gun was 2850 f.p.s. with very good accuracy. One of my "Norma" rifles was built on Mauser action, a "98" with a 24" pipe, and the other is an Interarms Mark-X action that was rechambered from a 30-06, as was often done. The later wore a 22" sporter weight pipe and was not as accurate but was lighter and shorter for long hauls. As you know the Norma has ballistics close to the 300 Win Mag and is a good all-purpose cartridge. In addition, my father loads Reloader RL-19 using a 180 Partition over 68gr. of RL-19 for around 2900 f.p.s. and gets super results with this load. The load density (powder volume) is near 100% in the Norma case and accuracy is outstanding in his rifle.

Re: 308 norma mag
have it rechambered to 300 win mag- ballistics are practicaly the same, and ammo costs about 25% the cost of norma ammo.
i HAD one went back to my old 06

Re: 308 norma mag
I,ve been using a 308 Norma mag for about 15 years now. Have shot many bull elk with it and a few nice bucks also. Loads are extremely similar to 2bit's and my Norma loves them. 3 bulls shot at 550 yds plus. 2 of them with one shot each. Not bragging, just spend a lot of time dialing it in. 3rd bull took 3 shots. Hard to find brass though and new stuff is fairly expensive. I don't re-load, but have a buddy that does for me. She difinitly does not like'em hot. They go everywhere. Great info though by 2 bits. Going to copy and try.

hustlerrjim
why would i need it rechamber to a 300 when i got one i didnt have it built for nothing. also got the a 300 win mag and 30-06 the 300 win is a good round but the price of the ammo is no cheeper when you step up to the loads norma makes standard.

Re: 308 norma mag
Universal Magnum Rifle Powder( RL-22).
180 Grain Bullet. Usually Barnes X or Winchester Fail Safe.
Federal 215 Match.
Norma brass.
Depending on the gun( a lot of Springfields got rechambered during the 50s. They are fairly soft actions by todays standards. So I slow them down about 100-150 FPS), I like to drive 180 grainers at about 3000 fps from a 24" tube.
Good medicine for most critters.

Re: 308 norma mag
I guess I do not understand what you are looking for.
I like it better than the 300 win mag, design wise. Very accurate.
Brass is tough to find. If I owned one, I would probably start with 338 win brass. Then I would neck it down and turn the necks to fit the chamber. Winchester brass is not as soft as Norma brass. It should last quite a bit longer.
I see a round that fits the 2.5" action( 30-06 length) perfectly. It drives a 180 grain 30 caliber bullet at 3000fps. What more do you want?

Re: 308 norma mag
it's pretty obvious that you norma owners out there know your gun and what loads they like to eat,not much i can add other than my dad has shot a '03 springfield .308 norma for close to 30 years and i've seen him kill deer and elk 500 plus yards, ballistics so similar to .300 it comes down to personal preferance, factory gun over a custom built, just my .02

Re: 308 norma mag
I load three different loads for my .308 Norma Magnum (130gr hollowpoint, 165gr boattails, and 200gr Grand Slams). With all three, I am loading to the top of the chart and it's a pleasure to shoot . . . I routinely use hearing protection at the range but, the truth is, this rifle is easier on my ears than my 7mm.06.
My .308 Norma Magnum was custom built for me by Kurt Muehler & H&K Gunshop in Forest Grove several years ago. It is the marriage of a mauser 98 action that my father-in-law brought back from Germany after WWII (as the original 8mm, he killed MANY, MANY deer with that rifle) and the .308 barrel that was removed from my Parker-Hale .308 (I killed several deer with this rifle before its conversion) when Kurt re-barreled and converted the Parker-Hale into the 7mm.06. I love both of these rifles!

Re: 308 norma mag
Just wanted to share a few additional comments on the conversion to .300 Win.Mag.. My experience has been that when using a .30-06 as the starting piont, you sometimes have a magazine box too short to accept .300 Win. ammo when loaded to std. overall cartridge length. This is often the reason for using the .308 Norma instead of the .300 Win.Mag. in the first place. You get the same performance in a shorter, lighter package that will handle the proper Norma bullet-seating. I recommend that you enjoy the Norma for what it is. In any case, you'll want to test fit the intended .300 Mag ammo into the magazine before going ahead on a conversion. Also, now that Federal has begun importing Norma ammo, you should be o.k. finding brass (and ammo).I have fire-formed the 7mm Rem.Mag. brass to .308 Norma, but it sometimes creates a slightly short case neck (it could be an issue on very light slugs as they are shorter than the heavier ones). If you re-form any brass be sure to "back-off" on powder charges until pressure levels are checked out, as case volumes will vary. Hope this is some help.

Re: 308 norma mag
Alwyze fishin
have you tried using unfired 300 win mag brass?
you can get them at joe's for around $18.00 per 50. just run them through a fill case resizing die and trim back to factory spec. works great...
also nosler has norma brass from time to time around $1.00 each.
I have tried resizing 338's but have had problems after the second or third reload with the neck splitting. nickle plated lasted a little longer.
I use H4831 70gr and 180gr ballistic tip from Nosler.
word of advice... i remove the caliber marking from resized brass for i also have a 300 win mag and 308 norma will chamber and fire in the 300.

Re: 308 norma mag
I could use three boxes of 308 norma for elk hunting. What would they cost. I don't do a lot of rifle hunting but would like to do some target shooting and sighting in.
