Default Hunting Reports Week 2/7 - 2/13

Man I can't wait for the 3rd goose season to open. Anyone else going to hunt them?

Goose opener? That's tomorrow, isn't it. I'm down here in Medford with family so you guys will have to pick up the slack for me.

Rusty and I have a coyote report and story to tell from last week, but I've been kinda indisposed. I'll tell you two quick things: we had a good time and I saw something I haven't seen before in all my years of coyote hunting.

Details later - unless Rusty wants to tell the story....

OK, I'll tell my story!

I think Skein is referring to the fact that I had the unique experience of calling in 4, YES FOUR coyotes all at the same time. Man, was it exciting. However, the real story, as far as I'm concerned, is the fact that as a "novice" caller, but experienced hunter, I was able to learn how to call as fast as I did. (I have Rauly and Skein to thanks for this)

Now, I suppose you want to know how I, we, did once all those coyotes presented themselves in such a FINE fashion. WELLLLL, I proceeded to miss three of the four while Skein made an absolutely awesome shot at one of my leftovers! Over a 100 yd shot, on the run, uphill, in the snow! It was unbelievable!

How could I miss you ask, how can anyone miss at 40 yds? Well trust me on this, they were "flying" by at warp speed, wouldn't stop for a bark or anything, and just kept on running.

However, the next morning, I sort of redeemed
myself with a 170 yd shot at a coyote who was standing behind a tree with a very small "window of opportunity" to shoot through. So, I felt much better about myself, and didn't have to sleep outside that night!

Great trip, better company, and plan on doing it again...soon.

Called the ODFW white river office today. I was going to go out if they had a cougar or two to hunt this weekend. The entire wildlife amnagement area is shut down to the public to reduce the stress on the deer and elk. Apparently they have lost 10 Antleope (of 25), several elk including a 4yr old 6x6 that had to be put down, and a ton of deer have died. No sign of any cougars at all not even tracks. The area will continue to be closed until at least march 15th. Still 8 inches of snow on the ground but down from a high of 3ft.
