Re: .22 mag Or .17 hmr (Poll)
I had a 22mag, at 100 yards had it shooting dead on. Could put 10 rounds into an inch without much to it.
The price of 22mag and 17hmr is about the same. If I was to get a new one, it would be a 17. Just cause with the 22mag, it really started dropping out past 100 yards.
And from the sounds of it, the 17HMR is like the next best thing.

Re: .22 mag Or .17 hmr (Poll)
This is a question I've been asking myself also. I've owned a 22mag for many years and have recently been shooting a friends' 17HMR. It shoots very flat and is awsome on squirrel / sage rat size critters. I have yet to shoot it in the wind, but most likely the little 17gr. slug will not stay on course at long distances as well as the 22mag. The fragile bullet should upset nicely in 'coons as it has done for me on smaller game. Rabbits will be a "no brainer"...literally. Also check out ammo prices, they should get cheaper as sales are increasing.

Re: .22 mag Or .17 hmr (Poll)
All this talk of new rimfires, and I had to have one.I went out this afternoon to look at new .17HMRs. I checked out the Marlins,Remingtons,CZs,and Savages. I ended up with a Savage bolt action .17HMR. It has a syn. stock, and SS bull barrel. The model # is 93R17-FVSS. I can't wait to try her out.

Re: .22 mag Or .17 hmr (Poll)
I simply have a speed fixation -- so I went with a the HMR. I have shot it in the wind and yes it is a little drifty -- but that little ballistic tip can cause enough shrapnel to do in a rat if it hits close. Have used on Jacks and it does very nicely -- had one going away at 100yds and skinned it fron tail to the hole in the back of its head -- coons -- no prob -- coyotes -- know your limits under a 100 yds don't see an issue -- over that and you better be right on their eye ball -- and should use the TNT hollow point.
As I understand it, they are also coming out with a 20 grain that will help with the wind -- but not the speed -- Ammo prices have already started down -- Got some as low as 6.95 by buying a case.
I opted for the CZ -- Fixed 6x Leupold -- from a bench -- 5 in a hair over a dime at 100yds.
Now if you feel the need for real speed -- check out the new 204 Ruger -- 204 Caliber 33 grain Hornaday V-max (same as the HMR only bigger) at 4225 ft/sec (based on the 223 Rem Mag case)-- YEE HA!!! I ...MUST... RESIST.....I.... MUST.... RESIST!!!!

Re: .22 mag Or .17 hmr (Poll)
Here you go on the link to the press release
http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firear...1-06-2003.html
Here is a link to the ammo please note the above post refering to the parent case being a "223 Remington Magnum" Close - 223 Remington is the parent case.

I think I'll stick with my 22BR, too many other guns to get first.

Re: .22 mag Or .17 hmr (Poll)
I don't know the true balistics, but my .17 sure hits the targets with as much pop as any rimfire I have shot. Have been real happy with the Marlin VS (same as pictured). It shoots super straight and I can't wait to pop some varmits!

Re: .22 mag Or .17 hmr (Poll)
depends on where you buy the ammo. I've found it anywhere from $7 a box up to $12 per box at the overpriced pawnshop down the street. I'd say the average cost in my neck of the woods is $8.50 for 50 rounds.

Re: .22 mag Or .17 hmr (Poll)
I read a review recently that said the 17 had much less wind drift than the 22.
