Spring bear anyone?
Is anyone planning on hunting spring bear this year? What units are you putting in for? I don't know the area around Portland so not sure where to put in for up here. I might just make a weekend back home in southern OR.

Re: Spring bear anyone?
Gotta get my but down and apply today. Going to try and go back to Pine Creek again this year. Late snow and a new baby kept my buddy and I from putting in much time last year...never saw a bear that we wanted to shoot.
Neatest part of the whole thing is being out there in a strange time of the year, packing HEAT!!

Re: Spring bear anyone?
I have heard that the SW corner of OR has higher bear concentrations than anywhere in the US. Not sure if it is true or not.

Re: Spring bear anyone?
There are a lot of bears in the SW part of the state. Not too hard to find them really. Find a medium growth clearcut, sit and glass it until your eyes hurt. Most of the time you can find a bear in it.

Re: Spring bear anyone?
The highest concentration of bears in the western hemisphere is along the wild and scenic Rogue River, where they have been protected for years.
They are easy to find. Just wait til after dark and they will congregate around your ice chest.

Re: Spring bear anyone?
SW part of the state is great! They do have the protection for the bears along the rogue but that is within one mile of the road on either side of the river in between lobster creek and... agnes? can't remember exactly but it was done because of the people using the river like to see the bears and those making their living off the river liked to show customers the bears but didn't like to show them some guy on the side of the road gutting it! It is very thick cover down there like it is in the NW but the they have more oak down there with pretty big meadows under the trees. I went at the start of the season just to get to know the area and then went back to really start hunting the last two weeks of the season. that is the time you really start to see them. Hopefully, I get to go back this year.

Re: Spring bear anyone?
I am putting in for the spring bear hunt and can't wait. I was told that this winter is the first winter in a long time that the animals will actually hibernate. In the spring time they will be out feeding big time. I am told that in the mild winters the bears will hibernate for a week at a time and feed, over and over. Anyone agree or disagree with this?

Re: Spring bear anyone?
I drew the North Cascade hunt twice now, I hunted hard but I didn't see any bears. I mostly hunted around mountain house on the pass i don't think that I will apply this year. Fall seems a better time to find one. I have shot two in the last few years during western deer season.

Re: Spring bear anyone?
I am going to get a SW Oregon tag and spend 4 days up in the Umpqua National forest. Going to hike up to some lakes. Does turkey season run the same as bear? I plan on filling my bear cougar and turkey tag that weekend.

Re: Spring bear anyone?
I put in for 1st choice North Cascades, and second choice Alsea - Stott Mtn.
I've seen bear in both of those units while elk and deer hunting. This'll be the first year I go after em in the spring.
And I do agree, packing heat in April and May is gonna be nice.

Re: Spring bear anyone?
I guess they are good eating in the spring as well. Less greasy and fatty.
