Ok guys, I have always been a die hard danner guy, but The new boots they have come out with are crap/ made in china. and I don't want them. I got the boy a pair of rockys and they are falling apart after one bow season so there out. I have heard a few love the Meindl's from cabelas. anybody have those? I want light weight and uninsulated as I bow hunt and my feet get hot. My danners have been with me for about 9 years now and they need to be retired. Any suggestions. IFY I don't road hunt so They got to be tuff

Re: New hunting boots
I got a new pair of Danner Frontiers and love 'em. They're tough, rugged, comfortable, and uninsulated. These are the most comfortable pair of shoes I have ever had. Ive always been a Danner guy too and havent noticed any problems with my boots yet and Ive had 'em for 2 years now. Danner still makes the best boots IMO. Just my 2 cents.

Are they rebuildable? You might try that.

Re: New hunting boots
If your looking at the hunters on this site I would not as they are nubuck leather and not full grain. If you want tough, you want full grain. Have you actually worn the new danners built on the terra force platform. My buddy bought a pair of pronghorns the day before his elk hunt in imnaha and said he loved them and was side hilling it on some huge canyons all day in em. Said they felt and wore great. They are made in Asia, but most if not all the lightweight hunting boots will be made in Asia or Europe, neither of which is a bad thing in the quality department.

Re: New hunting boots
Gottafish, I've got three Deer and Elk seasons into a pair of Cabelas Supprescent boots. Soft sole, good support, scent control and light. hot bow seasons and wet coast elk hunts. I wouldn't hesitate recommending them and will buy another pair when these wear out.

I have been using and abusing Danner boats since the mid 80's and have been very happy with them.

Re: New hunting boots
gottafish go over to REI and try on some hiking boots I have a pair of Lowa's and they are a good boot. If oyu go over you can get boots fitted to your feet and get some super feet. You know a certain partner of mine that was so blistered poned he could hardly walk after day 3. He went bought a pair of boots and he has not had a blister in 4 years. Hiking boots are shorter but you can add gaitors for wet weather and I would recomend gortex or you can do what I do in reall hot weather wear non gortex they breath better. Plus REI has great cutomer service and something goes wrong they will usally replace free. Hiking boots in my opnion are the best all around hunting boot light weight and they give you good ankle support for hauling loads. I probably have 500 miles on my Lowa boots and they are starting to show some wear but 200 miles are from carrying a 30 to 40 lb pack.

Danner or Redwing. Most of Cabela's brand boots are Danners made for Cabela's.

Re: New hunting boots
Danner still makes some great boots. The low end danners >$150.00 are mostly the new line low cost boots( ie lacross line). I think the higher end boots are still awsome, but pricey. I bought a set of military type blackhawks boots at the outlet store for ~75.00 (reg $240.00) two years ago and they still holding up great. I wore my last set of danners for over 5 years before the gortex and soles were gone.
Stop by the danner outlet store by the airport, sometimes you can get a great deal on the higher end boots.

Georgia has a boot that is identical to Danner and have the same EXACT warranty as Danner for almost half price. I bow hunt as well and they are great.

Re: New hunting boots
I worked at a logging store that sells Danners on and off through 5 years of college ending last year. I got boots very cheap to try out and saw a lot of boots sold. The cheap ones will wear out like any cheap boot, the expensive boots will last. I have had the same pair of Super Rainforests for 5 years. I blew out my first pair of Super Rainforests in two weeks. You have to get the proper width or the seams will rip out. You have to buy the boots tight and allow them to break in. The loose boots will end up sqeaking more. Some of the most rugged boots around are Westco's, but they take a long time to break in (like months instead of days).
For early season bowhunting I wear lightweight Merrel gor-tex Chamelons, or Danner Pronghorns.

Re: New hunting boots
My opinion, for what its worth.
No Danner boot is what they used to be. The last pair I bought, over 5 years ago, leaked out of the box. The sole began to flap after a month of, what I consider, moderate use. There is no warranty any more. I know alot of people that have had junk danner boots since the company changed hands. To bad there is no lemon law for boots.
Spend some money on a good pair handmade boots. Clemmons and Wesco (White's = Overated) seem to be the only companies around that have good service and make a great boot. But, be prepared to spend atleast $300.
Thats my opinion and i'm stickin to it.

Re: New hunting boots
The Meindels' uninsulated boot are what you are looking for, however they are not rebuildable as the footbed is honeycombed = lightweight. Mine lasted 10+ years of steep ground and scabrock.
And then get a pair of Schnees' hunting pacs for cold weather.

Re: New hunting boots
I'm in need of some new boots also. As soon as I get around to it, I plan on ordering a pair of the Meindl Sitka's from Cabelas. They're uninsulated and gore-tex.
I talked to a guy from Colorado on another website earlier this fall about this boot, and he said they were a quality boot in his opinion.
Think I'll gvie them a try.

Re: New hunting boots
I've had two pairs of meindl's and I loved them, second pair got overheated next to fire, they leak now, but I still can't retire them. The best thing is the way they fit your arches and ankles, they actually feel and wear like running shoes. I have also had danners, cabelas, rocky, georgia, and irish setters, all of these were ok (except rockys, I hated them) but none even compare in the comfort department to the meindl's. My feet get real hot too, but the ibexs worked fine for me. I will go with sitkas next time though. You'd be happy either way.

Re: New hunting boots
I own both the Lowa boot and a pair real Meindls. I say real Meindls because the boots you buy from Cabelas is not the same as a pair bought else where. If you are looking for high end boots like this I would check out aj brooks and Lathrop and Sons hunting boot systems. I just did the lathrop system and all I can say is wow! Get ready to drop some serious cash but on the next back country elk hunt or sheep hunt your feet will thanking you.

Re: New hunting boots
I bought a pair Meindl Sitka's last spring as my new hunting boots. Broke them in during turkey season and over the summer. I loved the boots.
Just got back from my 9 day archery hunt and the boots fell apart. There is a plastic heel cup that tore through the side of the boot. It is now about 2 inches and would certainly get worse with more use. I talked to Cabelas and they said I could return them for up to 1 year. Problem is these boots are discontinued. So now I need to find a replacement. Cabela's Black Canyon™ Boot by Meindl look good, but they are not waterproof so I am not going with them. Any other suggestions? I will spend up to $250. I have bad feet and need good boots or I can’t hunt more than a few days without terrible pain.

Re: New hunting boots
If your spending that kind of $ on boots you may be better off getting some custom built.I think they start about that price range for Whites. You can go a couple bills higher pretty easy but its $ well spent.

Re: New hunting boots
danner does make a good boot. just dont get the ones that are made in china ie: the pronghorns because they will last a few years if your not hunting to hard but if you want some really good ones look at the danner raptors or the santiams! cant beat made in the USA and can be re-soled
http://www.danner.com/category/hunti...ame+hunting.do
i also have a pair of irish setters called the elk hunter in a 400gm and a 1000gm and i love them they work great!

Re: New hunting boots
I too use the pronghorns and like them for comfort. Picked them up at the outlet 2 years ago. 2 years of archery elk (20 days total), lots of days around the house doing out door yard work, upland bird hunting if relatively flat( 7+ weekends over 2 yrs). Don't like the support they offer in the rimrock so I use the other pair of Danners for that( steel shank ) for sidehilling. I have been diagnosed couple years back with "hammer toe" and am flat footed.
I have put heel cups and over the counter arch supports in all boots which helps stability and reduces fatigue.
Oh, my pronghorns didn't keep the water out during 2nd elk season.
Good Luck

Re: New hunting boots
My pronghorns leaked immediatley, but I still use them because they are light and comfortable. I'm used to leaky boots.
The big problem I had with them is that the sole is hard rubber and downright dangerously slick on wet surfaces. Probably not a big problem if you bowhunt, but in the Oregon rain forrest, it gets a little dicey.

Re: New hunting boots
White's has a new waterproof (Gore-tex I think) boot, the flyer I got had a price of $350 ish. No question on White's quality, and fully rebuildable. Of course, I bought my second pair of smokejumpers, which leak a week before it rains, about 18 months ago so I don't "need" a new pair. Not that that's ever stopped me.

Re: New hunting boots
I put quite a few rugged miles on my cabelas sneaker boots this year & they were great. Lightest most comfortable boot I've worn. Virtually no break in time was required. I did put a pair of Dr. Scholls in them before I wore them.

Re: New hunting boots
I use the Danner Pronghorn boots and they are very comfortable. This is my third season with them and they have performed very well. I highly reccomend using the Danner waterproof gell. I put on two coates before archery season and they never leaked. I hunted in sleat and heavy rain a few days. Before the coating they leaked a little around the seams.

Re: New hunting boots
The Danner boot thing is interesting. After reading similar posts to this one I went ahead and bought Danner Pronghorns last year. Proghorns are the model that has no insulations. Great for summer conditions. This is my second season and both the left and right boot leak. My feet get wet even If I only walk through wet grass. Danner only has a one year warranty and by the Calender I am over ( March ) my limit on the time. I will keep the boots and add them to my Danner Collection. Yes ! I have another pair that leaked and Danner wouldn't fix them. $150.00 per pair per year to hunt is too much for me.
So Iam also looking for another brand.
And yep ! I meet all kinds of people that swear by them.
I don't swear but I cuss a lot.
#$#$#$,$#$# Danner Boots.
and I know Bill Danner, he says they don't make em like they used to.
and they squeek like hell ! too !

Re: New hunting boots
I'm tell'n ya guys... Seal Skinz
Bought a pair of XL...geeze like 5-7yrs ago and they still have not leaked. Generally I wear CHEAP Hi-Tek Altitudes because thier wides run extra wide. And most other brands are too narrow, bind, and circulation poor.
I wear the seal skinz rain or shine and have not worn holes through them yet. They are amazing. Best $40 I ever spent.
Even though I just bought a pair of those Wolverine Sale Boots, I'll still wear my Seal Skinz. I wear a thin nylon sock, and then a thick bottomed cotton/poly blend over thet and then the Seal Skinz very rare I get a blister and that is only because I didn't wash the dirt from between my toes after walking around camp barefooted.

Put Plastic Veggie Bags over your socks before you slip them in your Danners and that will Keep you feet dry.

Re: New hunting boots
I have worn these for the last 10 years (Danner Acadia):
http://www.danner.com/product/milita...7+steel+toe.do
They lasted me about two years per pair when I was in the Marines wearing them every day. That is more wear and tear in two years then most people will put on a boot in ten years of hunting. Once I got out of the Marines I went to work as a surveyor and wore them every day then as well and they seemed to last three years of daily use.
Now I work as a computer programmer and I rarely wear them so the last pair I bought four years ago is still going strong.
However: I have bought some extra pairs since then for back up boots when I fall in a stream etc while out hunting and I have not been impressed with the quality at all. The insulation on the back tore within a year on the one pair so I am wondering if maybe I shouldn't start looking for a new boot manufactorer as well or were these more recent pairs just a fluke and I can keep buying Danners?

Re: New hunting boots
Danner has always done the job for me. I had one pair of Rocky boots, they leaked and squeaked. I am on my 4th pair and 5th season with my current pair of Danners and have put a lot of miles on them. They are holding up great.

Re: New hunting boots
After talking to a rep from Danner at the Sportsmans show, I will not buy another pair from Danner. He talked about how the market is moving to China for "manufacturing" of most boot companies. And they are doing the same, why? Costs.
I now use these:

After 7 years, I'm now on my 2nd pair. And when I hunt I abuse them. I seem to succeed in finding all the rimrock in the county. Although they do have 200 grams of insulation. But they work well for deer and elk.
I should state I buy these because they not only serve my needs, but are a super value at only $129.

Re: New hunting boots
I have to say, I also am not impressed with the Danner boots. I got a pair this year for the first time ever. They squeek really bad, and leaked enouph to make me really uncomfortable during the unseasonable weather we got the third week of bow season up in Heppner. Everyone i personally know swears by them though. I think ill go back to buying a pair of $30 - $40 hikers every year and wearing the soles clean through. My feet might not be dry, but at least they'll be quiet. Ive done this for years prior to this and never had any problem. Last year I got a pair of Hi-tech hikers for $40 bucks that lasted through some unbelievable death marches, but were perfectly comfortable and I still wear them to work in. Beats $150 - $200 and my feet never know the difference.

Re: New hunting boots
I know Bill Danner personally. This is what he says.
When he still owned Danners they used to Water test every pair of boots. The company that bought Danners started using statistical methods and the boots don't go through the same rigorous tests that they used to.
He agrees that the quality of the Danner boots that he built his reputation on isn't there.
Danner's warranty used to be life time now it's only one year after purchase. Why do you suppose that is ?
I think Danner's is no longer the Boot they use to be.
Bill Danner is retired and lives cross the street from my parents house.
I wish Danner would restore the former quality that they were as they are a local company. The dealings I have had with them at the factory hasn't been all that pleasant either.
