Lion hunting video, watch it here!!!
This is incredible video.
Read the story that goes with it first:
Quote:
Subject: LION HUNT
The following is actual footage of a guided hunt that took place in Africa. I feel this footage is an excellent opportunity to examine the
incident from an officer's safety viewpoint. Before you start with the wise cracks Banjo, I realize the odds of a MCA confronting a wounded lion are not that high but this situation could very easily occur with a bear or more likely yet, a moose. I will forewarn all that this footage, while not graphic, does show an actual lion being eventually shot and killed, but not before leaving a very lasting impression in the minds of all those involved. As the clip plays, closely examine the actions of all those involved and you will quickly see why this situation dissolved into chaos.
We preach to each other that communication is paramount to officer safety and this is made very clear in this incident. Another term which you will see played out here is the 'Fatal Funnel", this situation could have very easily ended up with one or more of those involved being shot and killed in the melee. Another clearly demonstrated point, is situational awareness, as the cat regains his feet and passes back thru the crowd of rather excited hunters, notice the second PH trip and fall backwards over a small tree. Had this cat decided to stick around a little longer, this gentleman would have found himself in a very unfavorable position indeed.
As you are watching the clip, please keep in mind the minimum caliber allowed in Africa for hunting the big cats is 375. This hunt was a 1 on 1 hunt, which for those unfamiliar, one professional hunter (PH) is assigned for each hunter. In this case there are two PH's present and two hunters, as well as an unarmed female and obviously the camera operator. After a little research last night on the Internet, I found out the primary hunter was armed with a .378 Weatherby and his PH was carrying a .460 Nitro. The first round into the cat caught him as he was turning away. The 300 grain softpoint (Woodleigh) hit the cat above the right shoulder blade and passed out thru the lower/front part of the cats neck on the same side. The trauma associated with this round was probably to blame for the apparent clumsiness on Simba's initial fly-by. The PH's Dakota rifle was loaded with 500 grain solids which are designed for very deep penetration thru the heaviest of tissue and bone.(as shown with the final shot) However, even though this PH demonstrated the steely nerves they are known to possess, his marksmanship leaves a little to be desired. His first shot can be seen as the cat passes behind the small tree on his charge. The PH takes ol-Simba cleanly thru the front right foot. This was probably another one of the small miracles that kept this cat from disemboweling the unlucky gentlemen he decided to impress. I was unable to find out what the other two guys that were present, were armed with. But, in all honesty it doesn't matter because the cat was not bothered by their accuracy at all.
Hopefully I have not offended any of you by sharing this email, I merely thought this was an excellent opportunity to open your eyes to the possibilities we all face every time we leave the museum and head out on patrol. Any and all cross-tell would be appreciated.

Re: Lion hunting video, watch it here!!!
This is one crazy video. I think this is the same one that was going around a couple months ago. Someone said it the last time, but i'll say it again...i'm surprised that no one got injured with all the close quarter shooting!! It serves to remind me why I don't hunt animals like that!
