Antelope with 8 points?
I have 8 points this year, just wanting to know where folks would apply for a chance at drawing an area with a shot at a 16"+ pronghorn. Any advise would be great. I figure I have a "ok" chance of drawing a tag in a quality Unit.

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
Dang - I thought I was gonna get to see an antelope with some funky horns. 8 points on each side would be kind of cool.
No idea on where to send you for an antelope hunt. :depressed:

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
I've got four points, my plan is to get a copy of Percentage tags book, (I can't remember the name) and check to see if there's a unit with a high success rate and go from there. I'll probably end up just getting another point this year.

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
looking at the Whitehorse unit, nobody with 8 points drew a tag last year with that unit as a first choice. :depressed:
94 of them had 9 points (2 of those were non resident)
6 of them had 10 points
And I guess the rest of the 130 had more than 10 points, or listed the unit as a second choice

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
You should be able to draw a Steens Tag, I've seen a couple over 16 but they are few and far between. Good luck.
I've got a three point lope, has small horn on his nose

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
Juniper
Steens
I used to live on the East side and saw some good bucks in the Steens and Juniper areas. There is alot of space and most of it is Public.
None that would go 16 but some that were an honest 14-15. 16 is a pretty tall order.

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
Well...if you look at the success/results stats, probably your BEST bet would be to go with one of the areas that typically has a high number of tags and good numbers of animals (E.& W. Beatty's Butte?) and just plan to get picked up on the 25% of Non-Preference Points tags!
Give yourself another 1-2 points and you'll be "in there" with better possibility of getting drawn.
Hey, I got tired of waiting, put my galfriend, who had 1 less PP, in SEPERATELY on the same hunt... She got drawn, I didn't! I had to wait another year...finally, I did!

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
I drew the Whitehourse tag the first year I put if for it, Lot's of pronghorns their. But I won the lottery and have not drawn again for 7 years. Success rate is high, so if you want to get one, I'd keep applying.

Muleybuck,
Did you harvest a lope? Just curious! Siletz is at 16.2 and rising. I am pretty sure tommorow is out of the question.

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
Scouting and lots of it will go a long ways in insuring you get what you're after. The Whitehorse unit does have a fair share of nice bucks but it's out in the middle of nowhere. The Owyhee unit has a fair number of nice bucks also but they're getting harder to find. I'd do a bunch of homework between now and the deadline and see if there is any quality heads close to home and set my sights there. OR find a friend that lives closer to your chosen hunting area to do your preliminary scouting for you in trade for a couple of springer trips.

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
My wife drew the Malhuer River #2 hunt last year with 7 Points, She got one that was 12 3/4, 13 1/2, You would need to scout a bunch to find a 16" antelope.

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
It's frustrating waiting 9 years to get to go on a Pronghorn hunt so I really want to choose carefully were I hunt, now that I have a little better chance of drawing. Even if it's a few more years I wouldn't mind waiting to get a shot at a quality Buck.

If you really do not mind the wait, Put in for the Hart Mt. Hunt. There are some bucks there of the caliber you are looking for.

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
Get the Percentage Tags book, it's a very good resource. Then do your homework. There are lots of good areas that won't require ten plus points to draw. Hart Mtn. is a great place but you may be waiting another four or more years. Still a 16" buck is going to be a really tall order.
Good luck, let us know how you do.

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
One "thought" (I don't know if it'll work) might be to call up some of the various Taxidermists (I know that Dave Boys of Artistic has all those receiving stations and is "into it") as well as Sports/Gun shops over in the areas you're looking at.
Talk it up with them and see what they might say? They probably get pretty good input from various hunters as to "things they've seen". Whether they will share any of this intel with you or not, I'm not sure... But, may be worth a try?!!

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
If you want a chance at a big pronghorn, I would apply for one of the units in Harney County. There was a former world record shot there in 2000, and several others scoring around 88. With 8 points, it might be a couple more years though.

Re: Antelope with 8 points?
You could also check the Oregon Big Game Record Book or the B&C Book. It won't give you the exact unit but it will give you the county. The buck that BJLH is referring to was taken in one of the units by the Steens. I saw those horns and the hunter along with Dave Procks' 204 Ram at a Sportsmans show in WA, the year that they were taken. I asked the guy who took the Antelope where he shot it and all he would say was by the Steens. Good Luck on your pick.
