Good read
Any of you read "Man eaters of Kumaon"?
If you haven't I encourage you to check it out.
I've read it at least two or three times and every time I still enjoy it.

Re: Good read
A hard to find classic that is often quoted by many outdoor writers is "Meditations on Hunting" by the spanish philosifer, Ortega Y Gasset. A book written many years ago, who's observations still apply today.

Re: Good read
I hate to patronize my moniker, but the book Winterkill is a great one. It is a novel about hunting elk in the Wallowa's. It is written by an Oregon Author named Craig Lesely. He has a few books about fishing that are good too. Winterkill is a must read for those serious about elk hunting, he puts you right in the hunt.

Re: Good read
Robert Ruark's Old Man and the Boy is one of my favorite reads. If you're young, it will show you yourself in a mirror, anxious to go, full of discovery, saturated with the outdoors. As you get older you will find yourself in the shoes of the Old Man, reminiscing about past hunts, willing to spend time with the youngsters coming up in your footsteps, teaching, watching, sharing.
The book captured me when I was about 16 and I still enjoy it today (uh...several years later).
PS. If you've never read it, I've got a copy I can loan you.

Skein, Amen to Robert Ruark. Have you read "Something of Value"? It is another of his books that are great. If you haven't, you are welcome to borrow my copy.

Re: Good read
Snapset, I think I've read everything he's written. Something of Value was intensely powerful. Did you ever read Horn of the Hunter about Africa? It's sort of the saga of a safari. Not his best work, but sure gives you an idea of what a six-week safari was like in the 50's.

Re: Good read
Another book I would recommend, if you like the "Barry Lopez" type reads is...The Island Within by Richard Nelson.
He really has a great way of expressing his experineces in the outdoors. I really enjoyed it.

Re: Good read
Best read of all time is the "Thunder Over The Ochoco" series of 5 books by Gale Ontko. Lots of Oregon history, trapping, hunting, indians, wagon trains...

Re: Good read
Blacktail, who's the author of "Man Eaters of Kumaon"? It might have to look in the Safari Press catolog for it.
I 2nd Plunkers recommendation on "Thunder Over the Ochoco". I think I've read the series three times! The most interesting thing in these books is the fact that I've been to, or know where most of the places are that the author mentions.

And don't forget "Green Hills of Africa" by Hemingway.
I "third the motion" on Ontko's books. Excellent read if you're into Oregon history.

Re: Good read
wasn't the man eaters book turned into a movie with I believe Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas? It was about a pair of lions that were quite unusual they would hunt for the fun of it rather than need and bring back the bones for kind of a trophy thing. I can't remember he name of themovie but I do remember it was good.

Re: Good read
Snapset,
That was Jim Corbett. Capstick does a piece on him in Death in the Silent Places. What you're talking about is Man-Eaters of Kumaom, which Blacktail mentioned when he started this thread. I haven't read it, but would like to.

Skein,
You're more than welcome to borrow my copy.
If you're going to the Sportsman's show, I could maybe leave it with Jen and you could pick it up from her? I'm going on Wednesday.

Re: Good read
Grip it,
The movie you are talking about was 'The Ghost and the darkness".
Not sure, but I think it was lossely based on a different person than Corbett.

Re: Good read
"The Ghost and the Darkness" is a film about Lt. Col. John Patterson, a bridge engineer working in British Africa in the late 1800's. In 1898, two male lions (the "Lions of Tsavo") killed and ate about 130 construction workers; the lions were eventually killed by Patterson. The story is fascinating.
