Default Will these decoys work?

I was just wondering what you guys think of these decoys? Do you think they would fool a duck......???

Actually, I carved and painted them for "The California Open" contest in San Diego, Ca. Thought you might like looking at them, especialy now that the duck season has closed. Hope you enjoy them.

This Drake Mallard will be entered in an auction class, Decorative Smoothie Division. Non-floating, unlimited painting. First prize, $1000. purchase.

Top:Pintail Drake Bottom:Long Tail Duck
These two are working decoys, judged in a tank, must self-right, and the painting must be simple in a traditional hunting style.

Top:Mallard Drake Bottom:Pacific Brant
These two are what are refered to as IWCA birds. Judged in a tank, must self-right, and unlimited painting.

Toprake Pintail Middle:Hen Pintail Bottomrake Mallard
OK.....here are three just for hunting. They are not wood carvings, but are foam birds that have been molded from carvings. I feathered these out for hunting. The Pin's are E-Allen foamers and the Mallard is by Tom Matus.

Well do you think the ducks would like them....??

I'll come by and pick them up and throw them out by the blind and let you know.

Seriously, TWB, those are works of ART! Didn't have a clue you did stuff like this. WOW!

I'm deeply impressed. It's a joy to see workmanship like this. Can I say wow again?

Hey Jerry...recognized the dekes then the name he-he-he...We still on for a scoter scull-hunt next season? I gotta open seat for a gunner up front. The birds seemed to be really in full-dress in Dec-Jan. I bagged two eurasian widgeon my last hunt, and a bunch of common goldeneye. Its mostly a diver deal on the bay, the cans were prime! Good luck at the shows the dekes are fantastic!-Seth

Wow Jerry when I was in your shop I didn't see any of these. They are fantastic. Tie a line to one of these and I know you will catch a human. Hope you do well at the show down south, from what I see they look winners.

They won't work, Ducks and Geese will be evious and will not come in. Its really hard to out do "mother Nature" but you've came real close. Great work and beautifully done. Ray

Question? How do you keep those ducks sitting so still to take their picture. Looks like they are ready to fly off that pedestal.
Very nice work.

I really dig the top mallard. I don't think it would work though. That bird looks MEAN. How do you get a mallard to look so angry! No mallard who isn't looking for a tail kicking is going to decoy to that thing!

Thanks, everyone for all the wonderful comments, you are too kind. Lots of questions and comments, here's my answers. Forgive me if it gets too long.

Seth, imagine my surprise when I see you post up on ifish!!! It was great meeting you at the Coastal Carvers Show. Love your name "WetWrk2." It sure describes what you do for a living. "JIM," we have to take care of this guy.....he runs the "47" at Depoe Bay. He is one of the great guys and gals out there saving us wayward tuna fanatics...!!! You need to hang out over on the "Salty Dogs." You have saltwater in your veins my friend....!!

Absolutely, I will take you up on a scull hunt next season, several species that I need. I'm seeing a decoy in your future. Let's stay in touch.

id. painter, now I get it, you are a flat artist. All my painting is in acrylics, still trying to figure them out before going to oils. Love to see your work, post some pic's if you can? There are two world class bird carvers in your state, Tom Matus; in Boise and Ted Smith; in Nampa.

Sliver Eagle, you are so right, it's not until you try to duplicate mother nature, that you come to realize how magnificent and complex these creatures really are.

Threemuch, that scowl look is done by building the upper eye lid out over the eye. It gives the bird a bit of an "attitude." Some carvers hope that a judge might think the bird is saying "I'm the best bird in this contest...you can't pick any of these other ugly ducklings over me!!" Some times it works, sometimes not?

Periwinkel, that's a hard prize to win...there will be some world class carvers at this show. However, I could use a new depthsounder...??? Hmmmm?

Now, to get a peak at another of my birds, go to the upcoming Sportsman Show in Portland. Look up the Feather and Quill Carving Club booth. They have a Red Breasted Merganser that I did. You can even buy a chance to win it, drawing is in September. They use the money they collect from the raffel to help rent a room and put on a bird show in Vancouver, WA.

I will see if I have a picture of that bird and post it if I do.

Thanks again everyone, I hope you enjoyed them, as much as I did making them.

Jerry

Buck50, check out post above for Sportsman's show info. None of these birds will be there. Only the Red Breasted Merganser at the Feather and Quill booth. I have a photo of that bird, but don't know how to resize it to upload on to ifish?

Thanks for the good words,
Jerry

Unfortunately, the good lord didn't bless me with artistic talent.
Fortunately, he did bless me with the gift of being an excellent shot, thereby not requiring such beautiful decoys.
NICE!!!!!
