Default turkeys

hey this is my first post on this thread I have about 100 regarding fishing but I thought I would meet some of you. I used to turkey hunt down in california every spring and have shot tons of birds but when I moved to oregon my gun just colects dust. do any of you turkey hunt in the northern oregon area or is it all down south? I would love to hook up and would be more then willing to call for some one if they have an idea where some birds might be, I am not all that interested in shooting anything I just want my turkey fix if you know what I mean

The birds have done well in NW and NE OR. West and east on 26 will get you into birds. Just about everywhere on the Eastern side of the coast range, from Portland to Eugene has turkeys now. Access is the concern w/ those birds. NE OR has a really strong flock of birds. Umatilla National forest in the Fossil and Heppner Units has a good flock. The western end of the Ochoco's has birds. Lots of good places up north to get turkeys.

Kinda hafta see how the bird recovery is after this big snow. It sounds like the animals are having a rough go of it and the numbers may be down.

Please kill as many of them as you can, they stop my heart daily Elk hunting in the North Fossil Unit. There is lots of private and some public land up that way, North of Spray, South of Heppner. There is a couple of good public camp grounds on the road between Heppner and Spray. Where I see all the birds is on private land, but they have to be as thick on the other side of the fence as well. I'm going this spring, but mostly to thin out the coyotes

I have been turkey hunting for 2 yrs. I have been lucky enough to kill a bird each of those years. My first was out by Dallas, and my next was out by Scio. I do know there are a bunch out in the Kings Valley area, but would like to know where there are more. If anyone here knows some good areas on the west side, and more northerly, I would appreciate some info. I would even consider taking somewone with me.

Check up around the west side of Henry Hagg Lake. The state has had good recovery of the birds in that area.

Or you could just come to my house. I just snapped this picture from my front porch.

You won't need camo either, they're used to seeing me go get the paper in my bathrobe. I think I'll park my shotgun and just use a rolling pin on these guys.

Actually, seeing these day after day takes the edge off my desire to hunt them. I really want to, but never have because it doesn't seem like there would be any sport to it. I know that's not correct,(!) and they can be a formidable quarry, but I can't get my head past this scene.

Maybe this year.

Winterkill, NOT SO (!). I had to tackle my wife the first time they showed up, because she was headed to the back door with a bag full of birdseed. Yikes! Feed 'em and they'll be roosting on your car and living in your horseshoe pits.

The city limits makes a jog out to swoop up my property or I would have 'em downright terrified of my place by now. I shoo 'em off, but they wander back in. The dog doesn't even give 'em the time of day anymore.

I just hope they eat slugs.

Blue Tip,

Prolly wouldn't work. I live in an area where everybody has a couple of acres, so there are houses, lawns, etc every direction you look. My next door neighbor did have some guys come to his house last year and they got a couple, plus the folks up the hill took some, but man, you'd be hunting in somebody's front yard to do it. Besides, there would be NO semblance of fair chase in hunting these guys. Might as well go to a turkey farm.

Sorry.

I am a certified turkey exterminator , and what I see is an infestation  . For a thrill you should try to chase one down and takle it. How's that for fair chase

I friend of my son's trained their domestic turkeys to eat corn off of the end of a broomstick. That way they would walk right up to the shotgun when their time came. No, I'm not kidding.

Seriously though, like Salmonberry, I would like to get into turkey hunting. Is anyone is willing to show a newbie? I have all the gear, just not sure where or what to look for. PM me if you prefer.

skein- i bow hunt.... will that work??? fair chase, smare chase... i want to eat those little b*****ds. i have plenty of places where i can go and sit in the woods and call at them, but this year i want to get one. any suggestions near by? public property? if you do have a place, i will take an ifish turkey newbie with me so they can get one while i call them in, i have all the gear and calls along with enough experience for the both of us (the newbie and i)... unlike i said earlier, i do get turkeys some years when i hunt. just some times it's alot nicer to walk 50 yards instead of 2.5 miles before light in cougar infested timber.

Skein in a bath robe trying to tackle turkeys in his yard. I will take two tickets to that!

I have been looking at turkey hunting for about two years and have found several places that look promising. I plan on hitting them this spring. Sorry if this sounds bad, but I don't enjoy hunting with people I don't know, but I would give you general areas if interested.

Skein, maybe you could call the game dept and they will set up a trap and relocate so other people COULD actually hunt those birds, The reason they can't find birds that are released is because the like your place. I'm sure some of the neighbors are feeding them and that keeps them around and pretty tame. Some guys just can't get a thrill out of gluing a kernel of corn to the end of their barrel or using that "new" call "corn in milk jug" though. Just a little "domestic" for me! I like a real hunt!
