Default Dixon, Unit 22 - - \'looking for some info

I am planning a spring camping trip. We'll also fish, hunt turkey, spring bear (if we draw the tags), etc. I'm somewhat familiar with some of Unit 22 (up North, mainly) and I have good maps. I'm NOT asking for anyone's "favorite spot." I'd just appreciate any information any of you iFishers might be so kind as to share such as, GENERAL AREAS that are good for turkey, areas to camp, are there feral pigs in those areas as well . . . . like I said, any information you would care to share would be appreciated. Looking at the maps last night, I was sort-of thinking of the more Northwestern parts of Unit 22 where BLM lands border the National Forest lands . . . . . . . . Thanks! Don

Sounds like the North Umpqua would be the place for you to do all that. Steelies still around, especially in the fly water. Alot of turkeys from Roseburg to Glide, but you'll need permission or find some BLM. Less turkeys above Glide, but I've seen them along the road up there. Bears- everywhere, especially on the lower BLM lands. Best bet would be to focus in on the BLM lands surrounding private in the area around Glide.

There are some really nice campgrounds spread along the river. check with the Forest Service in Glide to see which ones are open in April-May. Some are closed. There won't be any one around to speak of in the fly water section of the river.

Pigs- yeah we have alot of the two legged kind who like to road hunt and throw out their beer cans. No 4 legged wild ones, that I've seen.

Shad Boy, I studied my maps quite extensively last night. The areas you mention are really close to the areas I was thinking about. I think those areas are also good because we should be able to get into some lower ('round 1500') elevations if the snow is still hanging on in mid April.

'Anyone else have some suggestions?

Thanks!

Don

'Hope you don't mind . . . I'm moving this up one last time just to see if there are any more recommendations "out there." TIA Don

How familiar are you with the Tiller area?

We always do well on the upland birds, and I know that there's an area up Tallow Creek/Tallow Butte where they've done a lot of turkey transplantation.

A lot of this area was burned and is growing back. The area has had a lot more bears in it the last 5 years or so. I don't hunt them, so I can't tell you much.

There is a nice campground (Cover Camp) right on Jackson Creek Rd about 11 miles from where you turn off of the highway. Most of the roads you can take to the left off of Jackson Creek Rd eventually make it back to the highway/South Umpqua River.

The Tiller Ranger station is on your way to this area and has really good maps.

In general terms, Tiller is south and east of Roseburg. Get off I-5 @ Canyonville and head east.

To get to Tiller you drive along the South Umpqua for a long ways. There is Steelhead fishing this time of year and smallmouth fishing when the water warms up. Just check the regs for the cutoff point for steelhead. Also, most of the hatchery fish get off @ Canyonville, so you're catch-and-release fishing for (mostly) natives.

Tiller is 1/2 hour or so from Canyonville, and Jackson Creek and all its spur roads are 10 or so minutes past Tiller.

There is active logging and road construction on weekdays. Also there'll be snow in the higher elevations for a while.

If you can get away during upland season, the quail/grouse hunting can be really good.

Once again, thank you C-lice! I did locate Tiller and, basically, in order to hunt the areas you describe only means I include areas a little further South from those we were already considering. The information is really appreciated! Thanks! Don
