The bowl game season is definitely an exciting time of year in sports, although I would be in favor of some type of limited play-off schedule to determine the true champion on the field every year. The BCS lucked out this year with the the two best undefeated teams meeting on the field, but this doesn't happen often enough.
Let's face it, even though these are college kids, the NCCA and the bowl committee run it as "big business". Show me the money!
As far as strength of conference it would hard deny the SEC the top spot for consistancy every year, although they're 0-1 so far this year (Missouri 38...S.C. 31). As for the other major conferences it varies somewhat each year. Actually the Pac-10 is 3-1 this year, with UCLA, Cal, and ASU winners with only the Ducks losing by 3 points.
However the SEC wins the power rankings hands down: Auburn(7), Georgia(8), Miami (9), LSU (10), Alabama (13), and Florida (16) are all in bowl action. It seems like it's like that every year.
They've got some major advantages down there. The S.E. and S.W. are major hot beds of high school talent. The kids play football year round because of the mild climate (I haven't seen any playing football around here today

). Look at the number of blue chippers that come out of states like Florida, Texas, California, and all of the warm weather states.
The main thing is that they tend to "stay home" when going to college. If you look at the rosters of the major warm weather programs, many are from their home states, with some ex-patriot high school stars from the North mixed in.
In the SEC states, Texas too, high school and college football is almost like a matter of "life and death". I'll bet some of these states even have web sights almost like ifish, but exclusively devoted to amateur football blog!
