DB anchor size??
Need to get a new anchor for my 14' DB, want to get a lead-pyramid style anchor for drifting, I have a river anchor/float I use when using the kicker. Question is, what weight will i need, boat weighs about 225#, won't be anchoring in anything more than moderately quick water 10-15' deep. I am thinking 25# or 30#. Thanks for the help.

Re: DB anchor size??
You've got it. 25 or 30. I use a 30 and if it's not enough I shouldn't be anchored where i am. I might error on the side of the 25, just that much less to pull up all day but really 30 is as much as you should need if your in moderatly quick water but then again moderatly quick is a little to quick sometimes.

Re: DB anchor size??
I recenly bumped up to a 40#, and am fairly happy.
It takes much less rope out to come to a good stop.
I hear alot of people raving about the animal anchor too.
Good fishing,
Chris

Re: DB anchor size??
I lost my 30# on the Clackamas a couple years ago and upgraded to a 35#. The 35# holds pretty good, especially with two front seaters. It is a little more work to hoist all day. But your boat is a little smaller, mine is 16 ft, you may want to go with the 30#.
Another option is to go with the 25# and tie some tire chains on it. I used to have some chains tied on my anchor years ago but took it off because my buddies kept razz'n me about what an eyesore it was. I should put it back on it works good.

Re: DB anchor size??
I use a 35# animal anchor and I love it.Great for holding in fast water at the top of holes for backbouncing.

Re: DB anchor size??
I lost my 35# pyramid on the clack last year (I ain't tellin' where - I'm going back for it next summer when the flows are lower). I got a 30# animal at Bimart for $30. Seems to hold better than the 35# pyramid and the five pound difference makes it that much easier to hoist up.
Also, I've heard from several folks that they use the same animal anchor on the Willy and Columbia. Just remember to give a lot of line for anchoring up and take your time setting it when you get there. DBs don't draft much water and are much "lighter" to anchor than sleds or v-bows.

Re: DB anchor size??
Amp, I lost and retrieved a pyramid anchorand all my anchor rope on the North Santiam. My method was to use a long chimney sweep rod of about 8 feet with a u hook duct tapped to the end then calmly backrowing while the front seater looked over the bow for the lost anchor and rope. Once sighted he was able to collar the rope in the u hook and raise and grab the rope and haul in the whole unit. If you need any help let me know and I could bring my chimney sweep retrieval unit an help you. You could even show me the Clackamas run. I've stll never drifted it.

Re: DB anchor size??
Lost my anchor due to freak clip accident. Dropped anchor, as the anchor hit the rocks, the little clip (like on a caribeaner) opened and with the current, my anchor rope swept off. All in about 3 seconds from start to loss... Will never use a clip style again, use the screw on locking style now!
As for weight, with that small of a boat, I'd go with the 30#, I use a 35# with my 16' and works really well. You could probably get by with 25#, but the 30# really isn't that much more to pull and you'll stick a little better.
Best advice is to watch the scope of your anchor rope, drop a little sooner coming into a hole and let out more rope, the smaller angle* makes the boat hold easier. I rule of thumb I have heard is about 7' of rope for 1' of water depth. And don't risk anchoring in water that is questionable swift. Have seen several boats run into problems doing this...I would have no expereince of course   . Good luck

Re: DB anchor size??
Thanks for the replys all, I love hearing a recommendation for a product at bi-mart, that is my favorite store (besides FMS) hands down.
Class 6, for the willy and columbia I have the smallest folding river anchor FMS sells, the smallest float with the plastic tube& bolt slider and 300' feet of 5/8" rope. Works very well for me. Sort of clumsy dropping anchor with the front deck in the DB, but my buddy and I have it pretty well to a science. I pull the anchor, just like a sled, using the motor, a 4 hp kicker, works great.

Re: DB anchor size??
Stevo:
Glad to hear you're out there with a 4hp. That's where I'll be this year and that's what I'm going to be using. Just got the new fenders on the trailer today. Still gotta mount the inside rails and rerope the front seat but after that I'm good to go.
Cully:
Unfortunately, my anchor is sitting on the bottom with no rope attached. Learned the lesson of good knots that day. I know exactly where to look for it, just need a good warm day and low water to find it. Once the boat is done, keep your eyes peeled for open seats. I'll be wanting to get her wet as often as possible.

Re: DB anchor size??
If you can't hold with a 25, you shouldn't be dropping it there for safety and as far actually putting the fish IN the boat especially with a stealthy 14 foot DB.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helvetica">Sorry, can't agree. In my old 14+footer, a 25 was not enough to stop me and a front seater(2 people was nearly impossible) in moderate water. Safety wasn't the reason I had to anchor in slower water, my anchor simply couldn't do it. With a 30, I had to let out a mile of rope, then deal with the swinging issue.
With my current boat/anchor set up, I can fish the water the others "slide" on by while dredging trying to stop. The 5 extra pounds( vs. 35#) was worth the extra $5. It did take a little practice to keep the boat straight while pulling up in that quicker water, but the reward is usually worth it.

Re: DB anchor size??
i have a 35 on my 14 foot db and it holds in fast water. i wanted to try an animal anchor so i made one. it ended up weighing 50 POUNDS. way to heavy, i guess i'll experement with smaller diameter pipe next time. if anyone out there has a 17-20 ft db i got an anchor. i'd go with 35 pyramid or 30 animal.

Re: DB anchor size??
I am with FWF on the anchor size I have always used a 35 lb anchor but sometimes its just not enough when you anchoring in tight water. I was thinking about bumping up to a 40 lb anchor myself
the heavier anchor is a bit harder to pull in depending on your anchor system but they stop you a lot sooner and you have less rope out to make your boat sway.

Re: DB anchor size??
I use a 35# pyramid in the Clack, Sandy, N. Santiam, etc., and I've been pleased with it.
I've got the flip-side question: what do you recommend for a Willamette/Columbia bow anchor system for my 16' DB? (type of anchor, float, length of line?)
Thanks

Re: DB anchor size??
Hey:
What are the measurements of the different weights? I'd like to make a mold, so the height-top-bottom measurements would be real helpful. Like I need another project!

Re: DB anchor size??
Thanks for the tip chromer I'm a bit on the unlucky side when it comes to losin anchors ,so when I lose my next 25 I'll step up to a thirty although the lil clack only weighs about 225 lbs.

Re: DB anchor size??
Class VI
I've been using the small size rocking chair anchor on my 16' DB for 15 years. Works great, I have 200' of 5/8 line and use the old style 5gal bucket float. This is more than enough anchor in the Willi or Columbia, and is still small enough not to be a problem. A word of caution, if you are anchorng in the Willi DON'T use this type of anchor in the falls area. You're likely to kiss it goodbye! Up there I use a wad of old truck tire chains. They're kind of heavy but don't get stuck in the rocks.

Buck 50,
That sounds good. I'm thinking about the EZ Marine buoy/puller, but I guess I wouldn't really need it.

Re: DB anchor size??
I welded up a 38 lb animal anchor for the higher winter coastal river flows. No complaints.
