Last winter I wrote a story about how I lost my bird dog "Belle".
I had a pup at the time "Morgan" another Britt. she is a direct descendent of my first bird dog when I was 12 .
I worked hard all fall trying to get her to figure out the retrieve thing.
Last Monday ,My son , his best friend, myself and Morgan went for our last goose hunt of the year.
We had killed a limit in the same spot the day before but the field was a hot one and we tried it again.
we set the decoys and were ready.
Just as the ifish goose hunters described "the birds all came at once" about a thousand of them. They wouldnt come in on my spread but landed about 1/4 mile away . I told the two 11 year olds that it looked like they might put a sneak on them.So off they went . I held on to Morgan.
Sure enough they got up close enough that each boy fired twice and knocked two birds down.
The snow is deep and one of the birds was winging and running along on top of the snow . Suddenly I get a frantic request on the Talkabout. " let Morgan go ,,, we dont have any more shells " the boys had taken off after the birds without reloading from the last bunch , and now had a winged goose and no shells .
Morgan had herd the shots and was waitting for her chance to go ,,, I let her go and she ran that goose down and brought it right back to my son.
Then ,while all this was going down another bunch of birds came in from behind me and didnt honk, I turned just in time to get a snap shot off and knocked a big bird down. Im not stable on my feet anymore so insted of running after the bird I stayed put till the boys and Morgan had gotten to where they would here me shoot . So , I stood up out of the snow pit and fired a shot into the air. With the shot the bird started winging along just as the other had done . Morgan saw the wings agenst the white snow and took off after it . Over a ridge and out of sight about a 1/4 mile away . The next thing I see is Morgan on a march with goose back to my son. She took the bird thru a large drifted ditch, some brush and a foot of snow for at least 1/4 mile and I didnt have to move an inch. It was a big goose one of those 13-15 lb birds. Too cool.
Those two dys Morgan retrieved about 6 times ,, the boys ran after the others.
I now have a new bird dog and it is official.
