dirty stinky dog...
Went bird hunting this morning in the sandy river delta and my dog found a stinky salmon carcuss and thought it would be nice to role in it. Well needless to say he stinks and has changed his residence to the kennell in the garage until i can get the smell out. I have tried citrus soap, lemon, dog shampoo... and he still stinks. Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove this smell completly. Thanks, Kevin

Re: dirty stinky dog...
Frazier,
We used to use tomato juice on our dogs when they got into a skunk, might just work on salmon as well.

Re: dirty stinky dog...
I hope he didn't ingest any of it. Keep a close eye on him for any signs of illness. Take him to a vet immediately if in question and tell them about the salmon. There are antibiotics that can save his life if need be.
Sorry, but I don't want anyone to lose a good friend to salmon poisoning.
I am also curious about the stink removal procedure.

Re: dirty stinky dog...
You could always try the Wahl's treatment and shave him down...
Besides getting rid of the odor, it is always good for a few laughs!
We shave our border collie almost to the skin each summer and as a bonus, in addition to the great comedy, no shedding!
I have also heard tomato juice works well.

Re: dirty stinky dog...
My folks use to live on the Sandy river and their dog then would always roll in the dead salmon atleast twicw a year. My Mom always used tomatoe juice on their dog and it would get most of the smell out.

Re: dirty stinky dog...
The last time my dogs got skunked, I used hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Don't laugh, it really worked. Better than tomato juice. Here's a recipe and the science

Re: dirty stinky dog...
Whew, am I relieved! I saw the post and thought people were talking about me again But since we are on the subject, I know that pet stores have special odor shampoos that help get that stuff out. They have one specifically for skunk spray I have heard works well in general.

Re: dirty stinky dog...
Bozo the wonder dog did the same thing last winter with an old scummy Coho. About 10 baths later( tomato, vinegar, and who knows what else) he was less stinky....And he had salmon poisoning.
He smells better now. But it took an honest month for it all to go away.
Mark and the " HEY GET OUT OF THERE YOU STUPID MONGREL!!" DOG.

Re: dirty stinky dog...
Frazier,
Good advice on the Salmon Poisoning issue from the other folks...if I may add a little to it:
Salmon Poisoning is a ricketsial (a microscopic organism, similar to a bacteria) disease dogs get by ingesting raw salmon, trout, or steelhead. It has a very interesting life cycle, since the ricketsia is an organism that is carried by a parasite that is in the salmon. The parasite has a salmon-dog-snail-salmon series of hosts to complete its life cycle, but it is the ricketsia of the parasite that causes the disease, rather than the parasite itself. Because of this life cycle however, the disease is usually easily diagnosed by finding the eggs of the parasite in the stool of an infected dog with the signs of the illness.
It takes about a week or so before any of the signs of the disease would become evident...so this event is not an emergency, but it is something that may warrant early treatment, possibly prophylactic treatment. The only advantage of not treating unless your dog gets ill is that the disease usually provides some immunity...ie most dogs don't get it twice. I suppose in theory it is also not advantageous to use antibiotics unnecessarily..ie there is some chance that your dog may not get sick at all, but the risk of causing problems from tetracycline is minimal.
Vomiting, diarrhea, fever, enlarged lymph nodes, and fever are typical of this disorder. It is usually treated with oral tetracycline if the dog is well enough to keep it down. If the dog is too ill, iv tetracycline and iv fluids. Waiting for a full blown illness can be a little expensive.
This is usually not fatal if taken care of, and about 50 percent of the dogs can die if not treated.
M.

Re: dirty stinky dog...
Thanks Kayakfisher! I appreciate the follow-up with the great info!
Frazier: I hope the best for you and your buddy. I kinda liked the Wahl method, but not in the middle of winter, Brrrrr. Good luck!

Re: dirty stinky dog...
Thanks guys for all of the advice and care for my pup. The majority of the smell is gone, but i can still smell that vial salmon. I have a bad feeling it is going to take another 15 baths and a few weeks for it to go away completely.
Again thanks

1qt nitrogen peroxid
4 tbs scented dish detergent
1/2 C baking soda
pint of vinegar
Rub and lather on dog and let sit for a few minutes before rinsing ---very important..........
Hang onto dog if necessary..............
Bury your clothes in the back yard........

Re: dirty stinky dog...
FWIW, the folks that make Sno-Seal Boot Wax also make a deodorizing chemical, that comes in packets (I think concentrated liquid in there) that's supposed to be "super" for skunk/foul odors removal.
I read about it one time in and outdoors magazine, then saw the reps at a sporting products show, asked them about it. When asked, the guy looked at me kind of strangely, then went over and picked up a couple of packets and brought them to me, said, "You mean THIS!". I read the packets and they didn't say anything about dogs/skunks/odors, but he said that was the stuff.
I've never had to use it yet, so don't personally know. But it's reputed to be really good, called N-O-DOR, and the company's name is Atsko, you can look it up on the Internet.
