Boatdog's First Duck!!!!
I posted this story in the hunting reports, but this warrants another general post. Team Cast and Blast (Skahorse, Boatdog and myself) ventured out for our second hunting trip together. Great Times!!!
I want to offer congrats to Boatdog for bagging his first bird ever last Friday. Way to go, buddy!!!
We didn't bag a lot of birds, but, for our team's second trip every, we had a great time. No tractor pull this time, right gents! Here's BD with his first greenhead - a nice, fat northern - way to go!!!
Make sure to check out the report on the rest of the trip - TCAB Report
Skahorse and Boatdog, another great trip!!! Looking forward to more in the future. Blast time is running out and soon it will time to cast.

Re: Boatdog's First Duck!!!!
Congrats BD! Waterfowling will most likely become another outdoor addiction for you. I love these kind of addictions.

Re: Boatdog's First Duck!!!!
Be afraid - be very afraid.
Waterfowling is easily one of the most addictive sports there is, and one of the most expensive. Fishing is almost free in comparison.
The Salty Dogs talk about 7 or 8 bucks for a tuna lure, while I plunk down 45 bucks for a goose decoy - and I need at least a couple dozen of 'em.
They buy a reel for $110 and they're good to go. I spend that much on a call and find out I need four more. My shells cost darn near $2 apiece and I go through them like water.
I've got a layout blind, 7 dozen duck decoys, waders, coats, camo, calls, and now I'm constructing a decoy cart.
I don't try to be there at daylight like you do when you're fishing. Oh no. I try to be completely set up by daylight, which means I need to get out there about an hour-and-a-half beforehand, packing stuff in, stumbling around in the dark, grassing blinds, setting out dekes, and hiding gear, just so I can lay in the mud and watch the birds work (if they show).
The list goes on and on, but yep, there ain't nothin' like it. Once you watch them birdies work, something happens in your brain - and you become mesmerized, paralyzed, and, well, addicted. You've got to see it again and again and again. As I said, be afraid.
Skein - who's going out again tomorrow.

Re: Boatdog's First Duck!!!!
Boatdog, you the man! Nice shot by the way! Congrats, maybe we'll get some more this weekend!!
Skein, you are right on! I figured that all out this year. I never waterfowled before this year, and my first time out I didn't even get to shoot. But just watching those birds is amazing. Since, I have purchased:
Camo Waders
Camo Parka
3 dozen duck decoys
2 dozen Goose decoys
12 ga. Shotgun
10-12 calls, only to figure i didn't get the right one.
Who knows how many shells.
And all sorts of various knick-knacks.
Oh yea, and a dog!
Way more expensive then fishing... unless you count the boat, but i have one of those too .
The only thing Boatdog has going for him is the season is almost over... He might be able to skip the addiction, but it will only last 9 months or so... Then it's all over...

Re: Boatdog's First Duck!!!!
Thanks everyone! And thank you, ORS, for turning me on to another GREAT outdoor adventure.
I've been wanting to experience this for years, and I am very thankful Ifish has brought me together with some great people to learn from and share new experiences with.
Next pursuit - the great Goose hunt!
This is definately addicting, and I can see how it could become very expensive!
This also has motivated me to work diligently with my four-legged friend and have her ready for next years hunts.

Re: Boatdog's First Duck!!!!
ORS,
I'll be happy to take those off your hands for a while. Now look what you've started with me. Next thing, I'll need 6 dozen dekes and a new shotgun!

Re: Boatdog's First Duck!!!!
A greeenhead drake is what someones first duck ought to be....not an immature bufflehead hen I snuck up on through the tidal grass on Alsea Bay many years ago
