115 pound coyote !!!!!
This from a friend of a friend.....
"I haven't received too many details other than the PA game commission officer confirmed that this was indeed a coyote. It weighed 115 pounds, was a female and was shot near Friendsville PA. I can't believe that a coyote could get that big, I figured that it was a wolf. I'll try to get more details. NO wonder the Deer herd in PA is suffering with critters out there like that."

Re: 115 pound coyote !!!!!
The eastern coyotes have traditionally been much bigger than their western cousins, but holy cow, that's HUGE! I'd be interested in more of the story. I remember falling for the big bear attack story where the bear was supposed to be 13' tall or something like that. Turned out to be a big bear all right, but nothing like the internet story portrayed.
Do you know where we can find out more?
Maybe Keta's right; a real varmint rifle is a 375 H&H.

Re: 115 pound coyote !!!!!
I don't believe it. It reminds of the giant housecat that was getting passed around. I didn't believe that one either.

Re: 115 pound coyote !!!!!
My question is how did he known it was a coyote? I would have thought it was a wolf. Is it not illegal to shoot wolves in PA?

Re: 115 pound coyote !!!!!
The main coloration on the back and sides sure looks like a coyote. The face doesn't, but the easterns are a bit different. It could also be a coy-dog.
I'm sure the PA Fish and Game will be getting lots of calls on this one. It will be interesting to see what they say.

Look's like a wolf to me!! But if I would have to guess I'd say a yot/dog cross.

Re: 115 pound coyote !!!!!
Holy **** that thing is huge. It looks just as big, if not bigger then that buck, which makes it hard to believe it is a coyote. It doesn't seem like a wild animal that faces so much competition from other animals could get that big.

That same photo popped up on a trapping web site a few weeks ago, on there it was stated the animal was a wolf hybrid (neutered).

Without a doubt that is not a coyote. Clearly a wolf-hybrid.

that is no more a coyote than I am a Gorrill..... Ok bad example. What I mean to say is I agree with the speculations of a Coyote/Dog hybrid

Re: 115 pound coyote !!!!!
Keta nailed it first. Leave it to a sheep herder to know about coyotes and wolves (red or gray). He probably has a red wolf hide tacked to the wall of his barn.
Good call, Keta.

Red wolves are neat but when their numbers start to climb there will need to be some control on them.

The first thing I said to my co-worker when I saw it was, "That's a freikin' wolf!!" Definitely not a coyote though! It'll be interesting to hear what happens out of this one.

Re: 115 pound coyote !!!!!
It looks to me like it could be a coyote, maybe not 115 lbs but a big coyote.
When I was young we had a Chesapeak Bay Retriever that weighed 110 lbs.
I shot a huge male coyote when I was 16, biggest one I ever killed out of maybe 200 through my teenage years when I trapped alot. This coyote was nearly as tall, not as heavily boned, but I would put it at 80-90 lbs easy. It was twice as big as most Coyotes I shot.
Color, face, shading on the pic looks coyote enough to me.
Testing by a lab will be the only way to tell if it was a hybrid or just a pituitary case.

Re: 115 pound coyote !!!!!
If anybody does any DNA testing my guess is they won't find a drop of Coyote -- bone structure, head shape, ears, fur -- just wrong -- the coloring is within tolerance but that's about it. Have seen wolf hybrids that looked just like it though--
But as Skein mentioned, if that is a yote =-- I'm packin' my 300 for varmits!!

Looks to me like someone got tired of the neighbor's Alaskan Malamute peeing on their tires. I don't believe it.

Looks like someones dog got lose in the wrong area . The face just doesn't look right for a coyote.

Looks like a hybrid to me. I would have been afraid to shoot, not knowing for sure what it was. Big dog though.

Re: 115 pound coyote !!!!!
Well I guess this story will pass into one of those - well is it real or is it memorex.
I found a site listed on rec.hunting today that discussed this "hybrid" Turns out the dog is a neutered male. Here is the link to the other web site
http://outdoorsniagara.com/hunting.htm
Course it isn't a sponsor so they will probably snip it out.

Re: 115 pound coyote !!!!!
That is not a Coyote, try shooting something like that here in Oregon and you could end up in federal prison for killing an endangered wolf. It was probably a hybrid or a full wolf (pet) that got loose. I would love to hear the full story.
