Yakima cattle killed
Read the article and tell me what you think would take out a big cow
Yakima Herald
I would guess Cougar, the only other predator I can think of would be a pack of wolves but I think they would have left a different pattern to the kill.
I dont know why a cougar couldnt sneak up on a sleeping or laying cow and dispatch it pretty easy. I would guess if the cow started off laying their wouldnt be much of a stuggle.

Re: Yakima cattle killed
Interesting scenario.
The Fish & Game guys are saying it's not a cougar, the lion hunter is saying it is, and the rancher is standing there scratching his head saying all he knows is that he's suddenly out a lot of money.
I think we're going to see this scenario played out a lot in the future.

Re: Yakima cattle killed
Has anyone ever read anything by Jim Corbett? He would have figured out what did this. (And he would have killed it too.)
One thing about this story really stood out to me though. The Fish & Game guy said that the 1200 pound bull was twice the size of a large bull elk. That's not even close to true. A large bull elk can easily top 1000 pounds. Considering how easy cattle are to sneak up on, I have no doubt a cougar could at least make the initial rush on a sleeping/resting cow. From there on out, who knows.
Speaking of Corbett, I wonder if anyone's reported any pet tigers on the loose. That would be an eye-opener.

Re: Yakima cattle killed
I noticed in the story the incidents occured in July, but the write-up is December. I wonder what, if any, determinations have been made in the meantime. You know, questions like were there any subsequent killings? Were there any big cats taken in the area? Was there any additional evidence that would point one way or the other?
Lots of unanswered questions, and it seems that there's been some time to help make a case one way or the other.

Re: Yakima cattle killed
Someone very important is going to have to lose something be it either a pet, livestock or worse before anything will change for either Oregon or Washington. They have all the info they need to change things but nobody wants to make any waves. How sad is that. How many times have we seen this played out in the past on this and other issues and how many times will we see this played out in the future?
Just keep the thought that someday someone who has the power will either get a belly full or will finally listen and things will happen for the good. Until then hang on to your knickers because it will get worse before it will get better.

Re: Yakima cattle killed
Being from the Yakima area...its not really anything new...couple years ago there was a 'Coug or 'Coug's patrolling the area from Naches/Selah/Gleed area, snatching pets and livestock...
Really easy for animals to basically circle Yakima as the entire area is surrounded by high desert, farms and forest.
Had the creepiest hunt of my life above Naches...hunted a bowl, and was circling it, came back on my own tracks, and saw cat tracks following mine for about 50 yards....made the hair on the back of my neck stand up...and made me reallllllllllly aware to keep my eyes peeled behind me.

Re: Yakima cattle killed
"I've seen cougar tracks out there, and our policy is if cougars attack domestic animals, we'll track them down and we'll kill them. But, in my opinion, it wasn't a cougar."
That's you're government at work. Do nothing and see if the problem fixes itself.
Complete and total BS.

Re: Yakima cattle killed
Some interesting concepts surfaced when I read these articles:
One, the bio's and the hunter disagreed, leaving the rancher out in the cold, with no reported resolution.
Two, reimbursement will never come because officialdom won't make a determination as to what did the killing.
Three, in many situations like this, scavengers; coyotes, dogs, bears, etc will mangle the carcass, making it impossible to tell what brought it down in the first place.
And four, the WA game dept has such a poor reputation in that area that legislation was passed (introduced by State Rep. Joel Kretz, R-Wauconda) to require on-line logging of cougar incidents, "Because people didn't trust the department," Kretz says, "assuming that those reports they were making were just getting round-filed."
Now, having said all that, I am reading and quoting the media, and haven't read or studied what the other side has to say. I will try to do that, and if anyone has information, please share it so we can get a better picture of what's really going down. I see this as the exact pattern eastern Oregon ranchers will face when "they-who-must-not-be-named" come to town.

Reimbursement will never come because it is horribly bad policy. Why should I/we foot the bill? Should we reimburse because every thing that happens in the wild causes damage? What about insects, deer, elk, beavers, etc? Cost of business, like road hazzards on the hiway, retread peels off, you hit it on the side of the road, road hazzard, bummer. If a rancher does not like it, get another business.

Re: Yakima cattle killed
This might be kind of an off the wall question, but do you suppose ranchers have insurance on their critters? It's something I've never thought about or heard about and would probably be a tough policy to carry.
