Default Ducks/Sturgeon

Does anyone bring a shotgun along while sturgeon fishing in the channel? In years past while fishing the channel I have had several birds come within range but have never brought a gun. I don't see where this would be illegal. Just wondering????

Make sure you check the regs real well and you would need to have a Northwest hunt permit.

Oh, this is Team Cast and Blast territory....once in awhile, but gotta be careful...some guys, while fishing, don't really appreciate it especially if they're fairly close. Also make sure the boat is not under power or still moving from previously being under power before shooting. Keep it sporting.

Launched out of Scappoose Bay today with the shotgun, but saw very few birds, and none of them were in range. Did manage one keeper and lots of shakers. Maybe next time.

Yes it is. As long as your boat is not under power or still moving from previously being under power and as long as you are shooting safely. But you have to be careful which side of the channel you're on - OR vs. WA licesne. As alluded to above by one of my team mates, I have shot geese during Sept. goose season while anchored and fsiing for URBs.

I used to take my shotgun in the drift boat all the time.

Had a trip on a coastal river with 2 chinook, 2 mallards and three wood ducks a few years back.

I was bobber fishing in a hole with 3 other drift boats for fall chinook in November about 3 years ago, "fish ducks" (mergansers) flying up the river so I set down my bobber rod and rolled one.

The other boats freaked   . I thought it was funny and we had the hole to ourselves within an hour

Everyone should whack a few mergansers (legally) when possible IMO.

Hey GRB: I've always thought that it would be fun to sit on the banks of the Wilson and shoot Mergansers. Fun and good for fish. Once the birds are home, clean 'em and put them in the sausage pile.......the sausage that you give to people that don't know better
