Re: Another Couger scare in Wa, this time
I read in the latest Oregon Hunter magazine about a hunter gutting or skinning an elk in WA last fall and had a cougar jump him from behind and knock him down, he swung his knife blindly and wounded it, never did actually see it.

Re: Another Couger scare in Wa, this time
Jeesh...I read these encounters and wonder when my turn is coming. I've had some up close and personal run ins with cats but have yet to have one stalk me, or act overly aggressive(I did have one let out a scream at me but didnt stick around to look for it!). Its a weird feeling when you see something that powerful walk into the same reprod patch you are going in....

Re: Another Couger scare in Wa, this time
Two of my friends just got back from a chukar hunt that they ended up killing a limit of birds and two cougars. The way I understand it was one of my buddies was going in to flush what he thought was a chukar out of some tall sage and this momma cat comes straight at him!  He blasted her, at a range of about 10 FEET, with a load of 71/2 shot out of his 20 gauge and put another in her while she was kicking around. I guess it isn't suitable for a full mount anymore. OK, let's hear all the crap about #1 buck and all that. In this case, he didn't have time to switch to something legal, OK? My other friend is coming over to see what's going on and his dog is going nuts around a pile of rocks. He starts looking in a hole and out comes another big kitty. He freaks and shoots it with his 20 gauge. They both had tags and no more problems unless you count the laundry bill and heart trouble. On a return trip for chukars, they did find more cat tracks in the same area. :depressed: An examination of the reproductive tract on the female indicated she had given birth to at least four kittens. This all happened in the Malheur River drainage, near Juntura, Oregon.

Re: Another Couger scare in Wa, this time
Come on guys, don't keep kidding yourselves. Cougars pose absolutely no threat to humans what-so-ever. The idea of cougars being a threat to people was just a story cooked up by all those blood thirsty murderers(people who hunt and fish) who just want to slaughter a completely harmless and defenseless animal. People need to stop spreading rumors about those cute little kitty cats and get back to the important issues, such as eliminating fish and animal murders that are going on throughout the U.S.

ORoutdoorsman - You forgot to cite the greater risk posed by dogs, yellowjackets, lightning bolts, etc, etc, etc.
