Default Edwing question

First I want to wish yall a late Merry Christmas and early Happy New Year.
Now for my question.I live in the S.F. Bay Area and have been thinking about getting a boat for the last couple of years and hopefully will get it done sometime next year.I've decided that for what I want to do and fish for(Salmon,Rockfish,Halibut and of course Tuna and such,)...
I've looked at and read about the Edwing 23 vec(the pilothouse model) on here and I really like the way it looks and apparent sea worthiness and of course not having to worry about my kids dropping 2lb weights in the deck and cracking it.....what is the minimum Hp yall think that boat should come with...I've read posts with folks having them with 130 on up to 225 ..I personally lean towards the high end of the spectrum but just want opinions....also did yall have to install your own electronics and what type of ball park price can I expect to pay for one with motor...(200 or 225 4 stroke.) Thank yall in advance....

Welcome aboard, MississippiRed. Looks like you've been reading our pages for awhile, so it's nice that you joined us.

As for the Ed Wing, I can't tell you what a replacement boat would cost, mainly because of the increase in materials. Best call Ed on that one. Mine rolled out on a King trailer, with motor and rigging included for just over 32,000. That was a lot of boat for the money back then, and I suspect it still is.

Minimum horsepower? I think my Suzuki 140, while perfectly adequate for my uses, is also the minimum you would want to hang back there. I don't know anyone who has a 23' VEC with a 130, but it should be close, performance-wise, to mine.

I chose mine for three reasons: Weight, cost, and because Ed told me it would work fine. I believed my builder and after three seasons I'm still happy. That's gotta count.

The Suzi is pretty lightweight as far as outboards vs horsepower goes, weighing in almost 100 lighter than the Honda 135. And the price was pretty nice too, coming in about 8,900 with a five-year warranty.

I had Ed rig the motor, but I added the electronics myself, and have a compass, a dash-mount VHF, a Garmin 188C, a flow meter, and Furuno 1623 radar.

Before you buy though, come on up and take a look for yourself, and maybe go for a ride. You can combine it into one trip - the check ride and the trip to Ed's shop.

I like my boat, but it's not the only sweet ride out there. In fact, I have friends whose boats I think are just as good - and maybe even nicer. Who knows, the price these days might be real close.

Thank yall for the hello and info on the boat...I'm looking into a few Aluminum builders out here and one a couple that build in LA and Mississippi. The only thing I'm sure about now is that I want Aluminum...I have three kids and they're less than careful if you know what I mean and I need stuff around that's hard for them to break..plus I like the plain looks of the Aluminum boats.....I've looked at the workskiff 23 and the Pacific boats V2325...(I really like the Pacific but the price is reaching the high end of my range as I'll be financing and want to keep my monthly relatively low....I'll be sure to give Ed a call in the next few days to get a feel for how that would work.
I'm thinking I'd like to hang a 200/225 Suzuki or Honda on there and would be able to install all electronics with the help of a friend of mine..

Eventually I'll tell a good Mississippi story...LOL...

After looking at yall's pics of those Edwing VEC 23's though I'm really liking the way they look...the determining factor will of course be the Big Boss and her plans for my extra funds... Thank yall again ...

IF you want to know about the goods and bads and power supply for a pilot house Edwind send "Ron M" a PM! He owns one that I have spent a nice day salmon fishing on. He will be the first to tell you its a little shy on seating room, but its got all the fishing deck a guy could ever want!

This is not a light boat, All that 1/4 inch plate adds up, and most boats dont have all the HP they could or should have IMO. Coming off a boat with marginal power, I went to the other end of the scale, I have the Honda 225 on my Edwing, I dont want for any more power.

I overkilled the HP for sure, but I dont regret the decesion, running back in, when I surf off the face of a swell and start to climb the backside of the next swell I have plenty of power to keep the speed up without getting that slowing coming off plane feeling as you go into the climb.

I have rode in Skeins boat with the 140 hp motor, that motor had no problem pushing the boat around.

My Honda 225 at 600lbs is a lot of weight hanging off the offshore bracket. 200 lbs more than the Suzuki 140. When I am fishing 4 people off the back of the boat for Halibut we get some water on the deck coming in thru the scuppers. The amount of water is proportional to the size of the raingear being worn by the fishemen A lighter motor or a little more flotation would be nice, unless you like standing in a couple inches of water right at the back of the boat. The weight of my motor is a major contributor to this deck water, along with the size of the crew sometimes

If you make it up to see Ed and his shop (an experience worth the trip ) I would be happy to show you the good and bad of my boat.

Replied to your pm before I read this post. Didn't know you were looking into the pilot house model. It would be marginal getting youself, the wife, and 3 kids in the pilot house to keep them out of the weather/cold/rain. Maybe, it'd be close, but maybe. But you wouldn't have much storage space for extra clothes, etc. But there would be fishing space for all 5 of you for halibut and rockfish. Tough to troll 5 lines though, at least I have difficulty doing it. Usually max it out at 4.

If you're coming up and want to see my boat, let me know. I'll try to arrange it.

Thank yall for the replies.....I'm still going to look into them as well as others....RonM gave me a good point...the boat being made up there could cause problems if I have issues where I need to take her back to Ed for repairs and also having something built where I can't swing by from time to time to check the process could also cause some issues.......still interested in them though....dern tanks man tanks.......I like the Pacific aluminum boats too ...gotta love boat shopping...can't wait until Fred Hall in S.F. next weekend....

Hi All,

Was wondering if any of the Ed Wing owners boats will be at or near Newport during the convention? I am interested in at least looking at some of these, as it is hard to find much info or photos of them online (other than pasts posts here on ifish, and even then, most of the pictures are no longer there).

Anyway, got another year or two to shop, I'm making the best of it.

My boat is stored in Newport and I plan on being at the convention. May even drop some crabpots in the bay or better, outside if the ocean cooperates. But even if it stays in storage, if someone wants to look at Edwings, I'll try to find an opportunity to accomodate.

Thanks Ron, I will try to look you up at the convention. I could also be persuaded to (quite easily) bring down some pots of my own if you needed someone to "help out". It has been some time since I had some fresh spiders. Just another of the dis-advantages of being 6 hours min. from the salt.

I plan on bringing a SAV and possibly the "pocket ROcket to Newport to the convention. I have a slot open for a Civilian boat in production and the end of January. See you at the convention

That would be great. I have been wanting/needing a boat for several years now. The trip out of Newport in September with IDP convinced me I don't just want/need a boat, I NEED a TUNA! boat. (at least for as long as the TUNA! come in close)

The more I get to look at/sit in, the better,

LR_

Don't know if I'd take a SAV to the show unless you don't mind a little drool on it
