chukar2close
FYI, all of you chukar lovers...
I've had a heads up from ODFW that they're getting ready to close chukar hunting in northeast Oregon, probably Union County and maybe Wallowa, too. Too much snow has driven them down to the roadsides and they're pretty concentrated. It's been a few years, but this has happened before.
If you want to go, better do it before the weekend, although I don't which day they'll close.

Re: chukar2close
Some guys take the jokes about revenge on chukar a little too serious.Last week when the snow was the deepest the game officer ticketed a group of road hunters that left 24 spent casings on the pavement in 1 mile.Real sports.Shooting into the flocks on the ground cripples as many or more than are killed.
I was ready to quit for the year when it snowed then froze then snowed again. Then we had some warm days and now the south slopes are showing bare ground. The birds I got yesterday still had fat on them and were healthy with full craws. If the season is closed it will be because we " hunters" can't control ourselves.

Re: chukar2close
Gary, I'm glad you called them "hunters" and not "sportsmen". These people are real slobs who ruin it for everyone else. People like that should have the book thrown at them when they're caught.
Glad to hear that you got some birds. Did that crappie bite play out, or are you still nailing them?

Hey Dean, we went out for a while on Christmas so Sandy and dad could try out their new ultralights and really nailed them. Haven't been out since because of the weather.Did you make it to the Clearwater?

Re: chukar2close
I shot some chukar out by the crooked river a few months back and we had heard some shooting up near the rim. Later while looking for wood we drove up a gravel road and pasted a crappy old pick up with 4 shifty looking types. at the end of the road in a pull out was all their garbage, spent shell casing all god knows what else. All over the place. We know it was from them. I wish I could have known before so I could report their plate. That stuff just burns me!!! No wonder so much land is closed, and too ethical and responsible sportsman.

Re: chukar2close
We worked our butts off climbing ridges and rock faces, thru knee snow to get our limit. As we drive out, we saw half a dozen road side hunters coming out of Brownlee. Kind of upset me a little but then I thought that they may get a few chugs here and their,,,I had more fun gettin mine.
Too bad they are closing the season early, but we need to save what chugs we will have left after
this harsh winter we've had so far.
chukar hunting forever..............
I wish I had my coytoe rifle that day though.

Re: chukar2close
Pan Fry, I took a drive today up I-84 towards Baker. There are chukars and huns right on the freeway, getting their grit. Didn't see anyone shooting at them either, but no wonder they're thinking of closing the season early. It seems that you left plenty for "seed". There is adequate cover and feed for them in the sage brush for a while anyway. Just thought you would like to know.....

Re: chukar2close
Salmurai,
yeh, it's funny you talk about feed.
the chugs in the Owyhee resevoir we shot had green grass in their bellys,
and the chugs in brownlee we shot had black seeds in their belly.
kind of interesting.
I agree, let's save what chugs we have for next year/season.
cheers!
