Default Shopping at the Sportmans show

So I am thinking about (For the last time ) taking another stab at a Trout Rod. I want another 4 wt. but I want a really good one this time.

So what do you guys think about shopping at the sportsmans show ? Is this a good idea OR ?

or is it better just to shop around at the local Fly Shops.

Something in the $300.00 range.

Primarily for Stillwater.....

Shop at the show, buy at the shops.

I usually go around and look at and try a zillion different things at the show and make a decision on what I want to buy. But unless there is some killer deal at the show, I'll buy at a local shop.

There should be a casting area at the sportsmans show again. All of the vendors should welcome you trying out there gear. There might even be special deals. Many of the local shops shoulf be there. I would try and buy from one of those. I want a three weight myself.

I was waiting for the show this year to go after a 3 wt myself. I do know that last year at the show Don of River City was making some pretty incredible deals if you BOUGHT at the show. I normally subscibe to Mark's advice to shop at the show but buy at the shop, but sometimes you have to pull the trigger on an unbelievable deal. My wallet will be with me this year.

What I am looking for is a 4 wt. Stillwater rod. The last rod I bought was Delorean. Some new brand out of Battleground. I bought it because it casted well. Ok it's a stiff rod. Well the tip is stiff anyhow. It's more like a 5 wt. then a four. (How do they determine that anyhow ? )

So what I have learned (From watching Denny Rickards tapes )

For still water a lighter tip is best. When the fish strikes a light tip will help prevent fish from Breaking off. So I am assuming this means a medium action rod.

I am hoping to meet Denny this year. I know he sells rods but I think the are a little too spendy for me ? and I want 4 wt. not 5 wt.

I haven't found a shop in town that I really like well enough to patronize. But I believe River City is probably a great place. They aren't in my neighborhood so I haven't stopped in there yet.
