Default chukars

I went out this afternoon, chukar hunting. For those of you who care, the birds were feeding on thistles. So What? Well, thistles grow on flat ground. That's right, I found chukars on FLAT ground. With all the snow (about 15 inches) they can reach the seeds. They are sooooo much easier to hit when shooting on flat ground. Does anyone know how to keep snowshoes from kicking snow up on my backside? What am I doing wrong? Every step I take kicks snow up the back. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe ya just have a big butt?

Hope you slapped a bunch of those orange-legged S.O.B.'s. It's so rare that you get an advantage over these feathered devils. Great game bird and good eating.

Put a shirt on and tuck it in. No more snow problems.

Sounds like you had a once in a lifetime red leg hunt. FLAT GROUND???

Born to Fish, I don't have a BIG butt, but a but that is way too close to the ground! With all the snow, maybe I'm draggin my butt!
PanFry, Northern edge of Malheur county. Want more, let me know.
Rauly, what do I do? Tuck the shirt in the back of my boots? Sounds like a kodak moment!
mcknerkneykak, This was the first time that I showshoed for chukars. Elk, a couple of times, so I had them sitting around and thought, "Why not?" Works great! Give it a try! I felt sorry for my dog, so we kept the hunts short.

I have a GSP and a golden I hunt chukars over. The golden to do the "heavy" long range blind retrieves and the pointer to find and hold them . Every once in a while conditions happen that make the retriever the "go-to" dog in upland hunting- fencerow, narrow strips and heavy cover. By the conditions described a retriever might have done well there. Whichever dog was used--you are right. The hunts needed to be kept short for the dog's sake. When you travel that far- you make lemonade out of lemons, adapt to conditions, and have a good hunt anyway. Glad you succeeded.

To paraphrase P. T. Barnum: "Never give a chukar an even break"
