Default Tent stoves

Is there any advantage to having a particular style of woodstove in a wall tent? What kind of stove do you have? Are you happy with it? Thanks.

i bought the kit from northern tool to convert a 35 galon barrel to a stove, awesome!!! i put a layer of fire brick in the bottom. the season i used it i started two fires in ten days, kept my tent toasty 15X18 bravo.. you can buy a new barrell from a place on columbia blvd.. 30$ or so- but this year i hunted out of my motorhome and the thermastat works really good too, so does the tv, hot shower, and microwave...

We have used a double barrel 55 gal stove for years in our large tent. WE now use a 35 gal barrel with a steel plate top that we heat water or cook if extra cooking area is needed. We built both or ours and saved money. As Fishstick said use some fire brick or sand in the bottom of the stove, it will last longer and heat better. Clean it out at the end of the season and then coat it with a light oil spray to keep the rust down. If you know anyone who welds and will do it for you, you can save money. You can buy the door and that can also be made but its easire to just buy one.

Fishstick,

How long ago did you buy the stove kit from N.Tool? I looked into buying one from them and they said they couldn't sell them to a resident of Wa. state. I'd really rather spend $30 for the kit if it works as well as a $400 stove.

Anyone know of a tent stove that will burn multiple kinds of fuel, like wood, kerosene, diesel, etc? The military used to have them, and my brother bought a brand new (Army issue) one at a surplus store in Bend about five years ago. But those are very hard to find. I wonder if there are any on the market that are not made for the military?

I've always built my own stoves for the tents. Using 14 guage sheet metal. 25" deep 16" wide 16" tall. Pipe legs and 5" stove pipe. The pipe and legs fit inside total weight for hauling about 30 pounds. Just shovel about an inch of dirt in the bottom before lighting the first fire each year. The one I'm using currently was built the year I got my new tent 11 years ago.
