Default New Super Short Magnum Announced

Winchester/Browning announced yet another Super Short Magnum round recently. The 25 WSSM is supposed to duplicate the performance of the 25-06 in a 21" barrel using an action that is 1/2" shorter than traditional short actions.

I hope this isn't like the 243 WSSM announced last year that is just now reaching dealer shevles. Or as someone on Shortmags.org said - I hope they make these and not just advertise them - or something to that effect.

The short barrel migh be handy, but I doubt the price difference of the gun and the ammo will make it a very successful round. I could see if there was something improved other than the action...but if it has the same ballistics as a the already established 25-06, I doubt it will go far. But you never know.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">The way I look at it is, when you can fit a 25-06 in an action that is 1/2" shorter than a standard "short" action than maybe I'd feel the same way about there not being a difference in performance. Same goes for comparing the wsm's, to standard magnums, they really are just another choice in packaging. To some that is just as important as more performance.

The short ones would be worth a look if I didn't already have the long ones. Maybe when I'm ready to replace one for some reason, I'll look at the new short ones. There doesn't seem to be enough to gain from the short variety to just go out and spend more money.imho

Maybe if they crammed some of these new shorties into a hand gun  now that would be something new, probably alot more cases of carple tunnel among shooters though but unless you feel compelled to own the most toys on the block I don't see any point in all the new rifle cartriges.Smaller lighter rifles but no real improvements.... how about a big bore shorty

I used to get all excited over new cartridges. But they are reinventing the wheel here.

The 25-06 is already an established round. Many fine guns are chambered for it. The new fangeled contraption may or may not be around in 30 years. Don't see my point? Do you remember the 6.5 Rem Mag?

Not very fun owning a gun that is a pain to reload for( have to form brass) or factory ammo is virtually impossible to find without ordering for an outragous price.

Oh an does the 1/2" of bolt travel make or break you? Why don't you ask the critters that have been killed with 2.5 inch( 06 length ...or should I say 2.494") cases over the last 100 years.

I do like the design of the cartridges itself( short, fat, semi efficient, beltless, accurate). But design alone means squat. Don't think I am right? Think about the .308 Norma and the .300 Win mag. The former is a better designed cartridge. Bullet speeds are virtually the same. yet the lesser of the 2( from a design standpoint) is supremely popular. And the wonderful Norma is dying.

Sorry for the rant. I am tired and grumpy. Maybe tomorrow I will come back and edit this. Maybe not. After all... It is how I feel.

Mark and the ballisticly similar to another lab dog.
