Re: KICKER?
I have a 21' custom weld. I just bought a new 9.9 mercury 4 stroke, I love it. I would definately think a 15hp would be too much. The 9.9 on my boat will idle down to a crawl. I think the slower you can troll most of the time the better off you are. Of course thats just my oppinion.

Re: KICKER?
I have a 19' Bluewater, and I put a 15 hp 4-stroke kicker on it. Works good for me.

Re: KICKER?
For many years we had a little 16ft jon boat with a Merc Jet 30 and a Merc 15 kicker. Worked just fine. IMHO the kicker isn't really important in the range of 6-15 hp. Weight is more important, and the 2-stroke Mercs in 1997-9 were the same weight in that hp range.

Re: KICKER?
I have a 18-6 Seaswirl and run a 10 horse Honda 4 stroke works great for trolling in the Ocean for salmon- and also on the back of driftboat for ducks.

Re: KICKER?
I like the ability to be able to troll very slow, especially for salmon. I would suggest a 9.9/10hp if it is to be used only for trolling.

Re: KICKER?
Too much motor and you'll have to drop out the drift socks to slow you down to the right troll speed. But keep in mind though that the other reason you have a kicker is as a backup to the big motor. I'm not sure a 10hp would be enough power to save you if you had problems. It also depends on where you're going to be fishing.

Re: KICKER?
I would 2nd the yamaha 8 horse high thrust, have it on our boat and it is sweet, quiet and great on gas. The motor also has plenty of power thanks to its huge prop just my .02
