Cure for chafing
This is a sort of 'sore' subject, but I thought I'd share it in case anyone else experiences the same agonies that I 'used' to.
About 6 years ago, I started hunting desert Mule Deer (with bow and arrow). Living most of my life in the cooler climates of the coast, I was quite challenged by the heat one faces in late August-early Sept. Perhaps the greatest challenge was dealing with 'chafing'. The soft skin at the upper reaches of my thighs (transition area from thigh to buttocks)would get so raw and tender that I thought I'd have to take a day off. I'd walk around like a cowboy that just got off a 3 month cattle-drive.
I tried all kinds of things to try and sooth my pain, first-aid cremes, vaseline, scentless talcom powder, etc. Some of these would provide some relief, but nothing solved the problem (and some were pretty darned uncomfortable themselves).
One day, while sitting in the middle of nowhere and wondering how I was going to survive my 'soreness', I dug through my pack looking for anything that might provide some kind of temporary relief. In my pack was a H.S. Scents antipersperant stick. I've used these for years in my armpits, and they've always worked pretty well for controlling underarm odors. My initial thought was that perhaps it would provide a bit of barrier/lubricant between my two tender spots. As it turned out, not only did it provide relief, but if used first thing in the day, it would completely eliminate chafing. I suppose because it prevents persperation.
I now carry two of these in my pack at all times (I put some duct tape on my 'bottom-end' stick so I don't get them confused).
Word of warning though...if you have friends that like to dig through your hunting stuff, expect that sooner or later you'll catch one of them using the 'wrong' stick under their arms. It's your call whether to point out the error of their ways....I chose to let them know.
Anyway, this was a kind of embarrassing topic. I'll expect some razzing...

OK......Here is what I read somewhere.
Wear nylons, the kind that your wife wears. They will prevent chaffing AND ticks......it might even keep some people from hunting with you
now let the razzing start.

Re: Cure for chafing
The Navy seals use Saran wrap and duct tape during buds to prevent chafing... Could you immagine running with sand and salt water all over your body... And the chafing that would occur...

Re: Cure for chafing
On a similar tangent....One of my hunting partners had a case of the 'roids a few years ago and elk hunting in August is NO fun when thats going on. He'd have to stop every hour or so and find a creek to soak his behind. In a pinch he started using face paint 'down there' to help relieve the soreness. Some pretty weird stories came out of that season.

Re: Cure for chafing
I work indoors year round and in the summer the chafing can get pretty severe. I normally sprinke Johnsons baby powder on before I go to work and If I do get chafed, I just smear some Neosporin+ on the area liberally after I shower, by morning I'm good to go. If you've ever seen me, you'd know the nylons idea would be really ugly.

Re: Cure for chafing
MY- dont let them razz you, I think it is a common problem. Not that I would know anything about it, but my friend, ya my friend has that problem sometime and he tells me what works for him is:
The right clothing helps a lot. If the problem is skin rubbing on skin, put some clothes between the skin. He tells me he is use to wearing levis normally and when he puts on the camo pants they dont fit the same (different cut) and skin that doesnt normally get rubbed is now some of that soft tender skin that is getting rubbed. The right undergarments should remedy a lot of this.
When his skin is rubbed sore from a long day of chaffing, a little neosporin ointment at bed time and by morning it is 100% normal again.
Poor guy, I feel sorry for him sometimes when he is doing that cowboy walk.

I like to use Bag Balm, the stuff in the green can that they use to milk cows with. I am a pro at using that stuff, Got to do it every football season.....sucks . But anyways thats what i think works, just smear a good size layer on and your set.

I know a very large woman (400#+?) that uses the stick under her rolls to prevent chafing and fungal growth. When I'm in the field I use baby wipes every day and baby powder when its hot.

Re: Cure for chafing
Sorry about the fold comment, it probably won't help at all to know I didn't make it up. Whereas the original topic is important the whole idea of chafing (fungus)is pretty unsavory, and the two are related. Its all about personal hygiene.

Re: Cure for chafing
Yeah, thanks a lot Wade, it sure helps out my thoughts on a day and bikini's to boot. Anyhooo, I can't say I've had a lot of problems with the chaffing for ya Mello, but using any type of slick undergarments are the way to go. I have a pair of super thin thermalsilk thermals sold by cabelas that wick moisture away quickly and are very cool in the E.Oregon heat also. Give them a look. Pretty inexpensive also and are skin tight to keep the bugs off.

Hmmm, silky undies...I'm guessing I'd look perty s3xy in them too, aye?
I absolutely agree with the hygiene issue, but when you're miles from camp, in the desert, avg. 87deg and no shade...higiene tends to take a back seat around noon-thirty.
Balms, baby powder, etc, all work well, but I've yet to find one that's odorless. When sneaking on desert muley's, lilac of the valley isn't much of a cover scent.
Lot's of good ideas here though. Cracker Ass...I gotta remember that one.

Try a product by the name of Glide. Runners use it for this very reason. Can be located at any retailer that caters to runners.

Wade hit it on the head . A lot of times the whole problem starts with butt butter. The baby wipes will stop it from getting started.I will not leave home without them when it comes to hunting it doesn't hurt to stop sometime during the day and apply a little preventive maintainance Timber

Re: Cure for chafing
Seriously, the pantyhose (manhose?) work very well. While stationed at Ft. Stewart, we would do monthly 20+ mile road marches in the middle of summer (95 deg, 95% humidity) and the hose is the only thing that worked consistently.
Plus, it makes you feel "pretty".
Butt Butter?

Re: Cure for chafing
so i thought i would revive this thread since many of us still suffer from this. i've tried many of the things on here, bag balm worked well but i hate the greasy feeling.
i recently found 2 products on the market to treat chafing
one from lanacane
one from Monistat
they both seem to treat the same way
i was able to find the lanacane at bimart, been trying it for a couple days, seems to work great, has the silky feeling of baby powder even when you get sweaty. no greasy feeling at all, seems to dry almost instantly. just thought i would share some success

Re: Cure for chafing
Just buy some glide and it will be taken care its the best is cheap and it works. Hikers and runners have been using for it years. Use it to prevent chaffing. No mess and no embarrassment from buying ladies panty hose.
I buy mine at REI and have not had a problem in at least 6 years.

Re: Cure for chafing
I will tell you guys right now the best thing to use for chafing is a product called BODY GLIDE and can be found at any sporting store like Dick's or Sports Authority. I was a painter for 6 years and spent a lot of time sweating in a paint booth and would Chafe horribly. I also now walk a lot at work and still use it. It was made for marathon runners and since I discovered it I have never had it.

Re: Cure for chafing
The Body Glide that Molina is talking about is what i was going to mention also. Two years ago i went on a 18 mile hike and when we got back to the truck i was really bad off. That put me on a mission to find something that would work and that stuff keep comming up on searches...must be some good stuff.

Re: Cure for chafing
You are going to think I'm crazy, but the best thing I've found is Mitchum clear unscented under arm deodorant. It seems to neutralize the salts and sweat and does offer some lubrication. I put it on my fingers and apply it. Its a clear gel.
This is a preventative, not a cure. Although I have had no problems applying after it starts.

Re: Cure for chafing
Pretty much my whole life I have dealt with chafing its a year round deal for me I get RAW in some real sensitive spots and at times it gets real bad. YES I shower daily !! every morning without fail I powder up using Gold bonds powder and it seems to help but at times esp. during summer it doesn't. I HATE having to use the powder it gets everywhere but havent found a "cure" I was told by a doctor that the sweat and fungus that is created by it is what the problem is. So maybe I need to use the anti persperent spray powder or somethin. Anyone else go through this DAILY ??

Re: Cure for chafing
People,
I used to have a serious problem with chafing and a rash. I tried everything on the market and nothing worked. I finally tried wearing under armour shorts instead of tighty whities. Problem cleared up in a little over a week. The under armor shorts are kind of expensive, 19.99 a pair, but really worth it.

simple solution: get away from the tidy whities:backlaugh:boxers and commando
switch to a MENS performance underwear such as under armour and never
look back
what you wear out of season is completely up to you

Ditto, my above post! I use Mitchum daily. Apply to inside of legs and the appendage that dangles between your legs.

I've used antipersperant on my feet, groin, and pits for the last 15 years or so. Its very good for preventing blisters, chaffing, and odor.
I also use Gold Bond, Neosporin, Alcohol wipes, babby wipes, and Charmin moist toilet wipes. All serve a pupose and at times make backpack hunting much more pleasant.
I also wear the Polyester type underwear that breath really well and dry quickly.
Have also on occasion used duct tape and mole skin for blisters.
Never resorted to pantyhose/nylons, but I do wear jogging spandex pants as wader liners and long underwear when needed. They breath real well, have rubber grippy cuffs that keep my socks up and allow things to slide/glide very nicely for all day comfort.
Taking care of your feet, nether regions, pits, and overall hygene is important for comfort in the field.

Re: Cure for chafing
I second the jogging spandex shorts to prevent chafing put a little baby powder inside first
Mid day you are sweating a bunch take your pants off for 5 minutes let spandex it air dry repeat baby powder treatment and go at it again
when back at camp use A&D Ointment to heal up any raw areas

Re: Cure for chafing
I use body glide and it works great to prevent and its cheap. Its what marathon runners and hikers use. It is not used to heal some thing up but to prevent it. I put some on my fingers and put it where it needs to go. It is ordor less and last for quite awhile. I keep some in my day pack and add if I need to. Baby wipes are fine for clean up. Moisture is what hurts, and I went to snethetic underiess for hunting years ago. I promise you try it and it will work. It comes in a stick like a under arm antipersperant. You spend a bunch or get some Body glide I have gone as much as 4 or 5 days backpacking with it one and it doesn't build up and you don't even know its there and it doesn't stink.

While this may be a great preventative move, I just don't see it going over well at work. But I'll try anything twice.

FYI - Just tried my first "5 minute prevention". I'm not allowed back in Albertsons anymore.

That's freakin' funny right there!!! Seriously though, I posted the same question last year, got pretty much the same responses and decided to go to Dick's and get a stick of Glide. It's pretty much the best stuff ever and saved my bacon on last years early-season archery hunt. My buddies thought it was pretty funny that I was using a deodorant stick "down there" but I could still walk at the end of the week.

Re: Cure for chafing
Back in "The Corps" some wore spandex under our utilities if we went on a long hump. I got out well before the whole underarmor thing made its way into service (2001).

Re: Cure for chafing
Because with glide you never know its there and you can buy 10 years worth for what you pay for the over priced under armor
