Default WDFG catches crab thief

While attempting a day off, A WDFG Oficer received a phone call from a commercial crab fisher whom witnessed a theft of crab from several of his pots near Kingston. The fisher followed the thief on a bizarre boat chase from Kingston to Seattle, thru the Shilshoe Marina and south to Tacoma. The fisher lost the suspect when he was forced to re-fuel. The Office called several marinas in the Tacoma area and located the suspect, also re-fueling. The witness shadowed the suspect north to Edmonds. The WDFG Officer and Edmonds PD made contact at the suspectís residence. The suspects offered very little cooperation. Returning to the marina, the Officer found numerous crabs hanging in a pot from the suspectsí boat. Enough evidence was gathered for citations for exceeding, 1st degree unlawful interference with gear belonging to another, and fail to record.

The deterrence of crab pot thievery is a tough prospect. I have had a lot of crabs and gear pilferred over the years. Good job to those responsible for catching that clown who has such disregard for our code of ethics.

Very Well Done.... I REALLY dislike thieves.

Wonder what kind of time or fines the thief faces??? Regardless, I'll probably think it's not enough.

I did not even try to give chase with the drift boat. I now sit near my traps and find that after 15 minutes, the traps are usually full anyway.

with the abundance of crabs in the rivers and bay, i can not understand the need to steal them from others.

I arrested a guy in Seaside a couple weeks ago when I caught him pulling other people's pots off of the 12th Ave. Bridge. After having my pots worked over several times in the CR...It was a refreshing arrest.

In Puget Sound this problem can be rampant! There's limited seasons and bag limits, plus an huge population density which equals a potential crab stealing disaster. Too many "bad eggs" taking "their share". Glad to hear they FINALLY caught someone , but I bet it gets dismissed unless there's lots of evidence????
