Re: ANTIQUE GUN
Rocketman,
Do you know anything more about it? Is it a Military Rifle (will have a full length forestock and barrel bands) or a Sporting rifle?
Does it have a nibble (had to spell that wrong for it to print!) for a percussion cap? Or is it a Cartridge rifle?
Some of the Civil War vintage rifles that shot .52 cal. "paper cartridges" (percussion) were converted later to shoot metallic cartridges. Most had their barrels relined to shoot .50 caliber and then had the Breechblock changed out to the cartridge version with a firing pin in it. Most were chambered for the .50-70 cartridge, which was the Army's first officially adopted centerfire cartridge.
If your's is a Military model, if it has a hinged patchbox near the butt, it's a Model 1859. If it doesn't have the patch box, then it's an 1863.
If you want, e-mail me and I might be able to tell you more about it.
