Newbie Report
Hunted a new spot in the George, had to break 2 to 3 inches of ice at the launch. It was sprinkling snow and cold as can be. Anything that came in contact with the water turned to ice; the boat, coats, anchor ropes, gun slings, everything froze. We set up a little after shoot time, but still a little dark. Because we had never hunted there it took us a while to figure the area out and decide where to set up. We managed to get 1 hen Mallard and 1 Hen Teal, right after we set up, but then the ducks stopped flying. My partner did some foot scouting and saw a woodduck, but could not get a shot. We decided to pick up and scout the area for other spots for tomorrow. We found a nice marsh area off the big water; we walked in and manage another Hen Mallard. We sat in the reeds no decoys to see what would dip and knocked a Shovler down. We went scouting again and did not find anywhere else decent to hunt so we went back to the marsh. Walked in on 2 Golden Eyes, hit them both, but only managed to retrieve one. My partner chased the other one all over but lost it when it went under a big patch of Ice. While my partner was chasing the cripple I managed to get a Gadwall.
In the middle of everything we also took a few coots, which were good retrieving practice for my new lab.
We decided that we had enough of the wind and ice at noon and headed home.
Although we did not limit out I would say this hunt rates high in my book. A new spot (which is always a plus when primary’s are not producing) did not get skunked and got a duck (Golden Eye) neither of us has shot before. Spotting the woodduck was a plus also.
We are going to brave the ice, the snow and wind again tomorrow. Hopefully we will get set up earlier and get some better shooting at light.
We also got to test my dog’s new jacket, which kept him nice and warm.
Just a fun day over all.
Oh and I am new to the forum and have found it to be a wealth of knowledge. Thanks Jimbo for recommending the site.
