Default Wolves in Meachem

My dad and I were driving to Starkey a few weeks ago for our elk hunt. While going over the pass there was two huge dogs out in the middle of the highway. We looked and them and they looked a lot like coyotes but a whole lot bigger. Has anyone seen or heard about wolves in this are??

I had some acquantaintences tell me the same general story back in mid November and I was told essentially the following by ODFW. People were stopping on the freeway to take a gander as they were on the right of way that time.

There were supposed to be 4 light colored, large canines that were turned loose by someone in the area and are free roaming. The Union Co. sheriff shot two of them for chasing deer and bothering people. The other two were still on the loose as of a couple of weeks ago when I talked to the sheriff. They are supposed to be dogs or wolf hybrids depending on who you hear the story from. ODFW (Henjum)says they are definitely NOt wolves.

These canines are between Spring Creek hill and Hilgard Park area, where you turn up toward Starkey. Sound like the same ones? Did you harvest one?

Sounds like elkaholic has a more realistic case about them, but don't forget a wolf was hit by a truck on I-84 a few years back near the starkey turn off. So it's possible but unlikely.

GRR:

My brothers in-laws live just south of the lake next to Meacham. They have not said anything about any spotting's.

On the other hand I did hear of several sightings in the Ukiah area. I asked a ODFW worker about it and he said it was possible. He also told me that the ODFW does not have any juristiction on the wolf's. It's totaly a USFW project. He did mention something about in the future, as they cross into Oregon from Idaho and depending on the numbers, they may be classified as a "game animal". I dont see it happening but I guess if there is enough impact on the herd numbers they might do a draw. I would say only a couple tags a year. Who knows?
He did say that "they are comming and probably already here".
