Are black powder pellets legal in Oregon?
Are black powder pellets legal in Oregon?
I can't find the answer in the state reg book or online anywhere. Please help me.
Feel free to offer your input on your choice of powder as well. I'm looking at using Hogdons 777 sulfurless powder or pellets.

I dont think they are during a Muzzle loader hunt...I believe you can use them during a centerfire hunt...It should be the notes under the legal calibers for big game...

Re: Are black powder pellets legal in Oregon?
They don't spell it out very well under the definations. It says( and loaded from the muzzle with an open ignation system and open or peep sights.
The only reason I'm wanting to use pellets is so I dont' have to worry about measuring the powder.

They are not legal. Granular powders only.

Re: Are black powder pellets legal in Oregon?
Pellets are not legal during muzzleloader hunts.
They make some small plastic gizmos called speedloaders (if there is such a thing). It holds a conical bullet, cap, and premeasured powder. You can stick three or four in your pocket and go hunting.

Re: Are black powder pellets legal in Oregon?
I don't want to sound like a nay sayer. Where did you find the information? I have read the new 04 Big game regs book cover to cover and tried to find information online as well. I can't find any information on this subject.
Thanks for helping me.

Re: Are black powder pellets legal in Oregon?
Look at the 2004 big game hunting regulations, specifically page 17, specifically the fourth bullet in that reg.
quote
It is illegal to hunt with pelletized powders or propellants during muzzleloader-only seasons.

Re: Are black powder pellets legal in Oregon?
Can you use modern muzzle loaders like they sell in Cabela's? I am confused as well, I am not a blackpowder hunter but, I have thought about trying it. When I went to Sportsmen warehouse to look at them they had some but, the guy said that they were not legal for hunting?

Re: Are black powder pellets legal in Oregon?
In the 2004 regulations. Page 17...Legal Hunting Methods. The lower half of the page below GENERAL PROVISIONS, you'll see a section under Muzzleloader. That section tells you all the legalities for muzzleloader seasons.

Re: Are black powder pellets legal in Oregon?
If you guys look at page 17 of the current regulations, the list what is 'not legal' for use in muzzleloader only hunts. You can find many hunt-legal guns at cabelas or sportsman warehouse. The two main things that make many modern arms illegal are fiber optic sights, and a breech that completly encloses the precussion cap.

Re: Are black powder pellets legal in Oregon?
Thank you for pointing that out. I don't know how I missed that whole section. I feel like a real . Do you have any recommendation on a good clean powder?

Re: Are black powder pellets legal in Oregon?
Keeper, I agree 100% with you and your 777. What a forgiving powder. I have hunted with a Rem. model 700 in line for white tails in eatern Oregon the last 5 years and what a adventure. One thing I have learned for the past years of expeience is " DON'T HURRY". If you do it will bite you right smack in the b##t. I started out using the pyrodex pellets untill they condemend them for hunting. Next step wass 100 grains of pyrodex powder. The only problem was it was dirty, Three or four shots and you better start swabbing. 777 was my next step with 225gr Buffalo Bullets, and man what a shocker. I Dont even take a second thought of shooting 125-130 yards. My advice to you is once you but a cap on the smoker, you'll never put away. What a adventure and safe shooting.

Re: Are black powder pellets legal in Oregon?
777 is supposed to be THE powder for hunting! It's clean burning, low fouling, low corrosive and MORE powerful that conventional Blackpowder.
However, I've been involved in various aspects of Blackpowder shooting and enjoy shooting the real stuff!
I know, it's dirtier, it fouls and needs to be cleaned after a few shots as well as being cleaned at the end of a day of shooting it.
Still, I just enjoy using it. My rifle's "good to go" for a first shot plus a reload before swabbing out the bore with a wet patch followed by a dry patch...big deal. I figure that if I can't get an individual animal with 2 shots, then I'm probably not going to get a third shot anyway!
From what I can see, in Oregon there's not that big an advantage to having/owning an inline, so my T-C sidehammer caplock will work just fine. I got a deer with mine this year and a friend wanted to get one similar to mine for a muzzleloader hunt and he bagged an Elk with his on his first day of hunting.
