Default Fish Story

Guess I really didn't post a fish story to get started,so here goes.......

Get In The Boat

It was a fine fall day and my partner and I were drifting the N. fork Lewis in my 14'Drift boat. Why, you ask does he mention 14'.The significance is low gunwales.(You probably won't believe this story anyway, but it is true as my partner will attest to it.)There were lots of salmon in the river and they were rolling and jumping all around the boat.
We fished for about two hours without so much as a bump.I was getting a little discouraged, and I was telling this to my partner as we backtrolled through some water.(Picture me with oars in my hands). In my usual efficient rowing manner I managed to splash the water with the right hand oar and I must have really spooked the fish because a 14 pound chinook jumped over the gunnel and landed right in my lap.Needless to say I was stunned.Well the fish was for about a second also until it realized it was out of the water and went beszerk!I was sitting in the rowing seat with my mouth open when my partner casually turns around and says"You better do something because he's going to break something!" Well this brought me back to reality and I managed to get hold of the fish. Now I ask my partner if it's legal to keep the fish and he just looks at me and says he wouldn't keep anything that dark,so back in the water it goes.I know you don't believe me but this is a true story.
the only fish in the boat that day.

We've had two fish jump into the boat over the years, but both were fish we had hooked. The first was a Spring Chinook that was making a sizzling run straight for the back of the boat. When it got close to the boat it jumped and landed in the self bailing motor well. My brother and buddy were laughing so hard over what had happenened that they didn't get to the fish before the hooks tore out when they got caught on the motor cables. The fish slipped over the side as quickly as it had come into the boat. I had a summer Steelhead jump into the boat while I was playing it. That one didn't get away.

Thanks for the responses guys. It's nice to know I am not the only one who has had fish jump in the boat.I have seen some sturgeon jump out of the water at bonneville when the shad are in in the spring that have scared the heck out of me.I now fish out of a 19' Thunderjet and I know I wouldn't want a 7-9 foot sturgeon jumpin in with us!

Welcome aboard .. I believe . I had an oversized sturgeon Jump four feet out of the water ( it was about ten feet long ).I was on a plain and doing about 35 mpg .I saw the tail on the way down and it was ten feet from mw bow dead center It went out of sight and i could not change course . All that i could think about was had it come through the windshield it would have hurt and been ugly .
