Default what was that boom in portland?

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...8231e3af9d5624

PORTLAND - At about 8:05 p.m. Sunday, a loud "boom" reverberated across the Portland area.

9-1-1 centers got calls from Clackamas County to Vancouver, from people wondering what had happened. The 9-1-1 operators, and many others, were wondering that themselves.

Some people who called and emailed KOIN Local 6 speculated that it might have been a sonic boom. Most described it as quite loud, like an explosion. One person in Boring, in Clackamas County, was on the phone with a friend in Vancouver. That caller says both heard the boom while they were talking. The incident sent some law agencies, seismic centers and other agencies looking for answers. Some callers say the boom shook their homes. Some say it sounded like a very loud sonic boom - the explosion sound that happens when a fast-flying jet plane breaks the sound barrier.

The FAA Northwest Regional Office says it has no reports of a sonic boom in the Portland area, but adds that the FAA does not control military jets - and military jets, not civilian ones, are the ones capable of flying faster than the speed of sound.

An online Google Map shows where some of the reports of people hearing it came from. Most, but not all, of the reports come from the Southeast Portland region between the southern city limits up to the Laurelhurst neighborhood. Several Sellwood-area residents say they heard a similar boom on March 15.

I heard it, shook the windows of my house. Live in Sellwood thought it was thunder but when I walked outside the clouds were not right.

I'm out in Gresham and heard it too. Thought it was thunder. It'll be interesting to find out (hopefully) what it really was.

Let's see...could be underground meth labs gone bad, terrorists practicing underground, Portland's wonderful sewer system backing up sewer gas and exploding, Air Force jets having fun with the City of Weird? Any other ideas? ( wasn't being serious)

Kinda find it hard to believe myself...but a lady who lives in condos by the Sellwood Bridge said that she woke up to a very bright light in her condo...followed by a large "boom"...So how big would a pipe bomb have to be to create all that? Pretty danged big (don't know anything about pipe bombs so don't have a clue)

that's your typical government cover up

its kind of hard to think that so many people from FAR away heard it when it was a pipe bomb

When does it leave the pipe bomb category and go into bomb status?
to me a pipe bomb is rather on the smaller side but something like this I would think would take some the size of a water heater size

I remember when I was a kid and Precision Cast parts on Johnson Creek Rd. had an explosion we lived over off of 92nd and Flavel and that shook the house and windows pretty good, and that was labeled a major explosion

Can you hear the Vancouver 4th of July fireworks in SE Portland? I'll bet you can.

Why is it that every time someone starts a thread lately somebody has to try to slip in some dopey thinly veiled political commentary like the stuff about Jesse Jackson? It's getting really old and boring.

Wow!

Did no one else see the news footage of the huge bomb crater that suddenly appeared in Powers Marine Park with bits of plastic Pipe strewn all around it? It was the size of a short bus, which must be what the brainiac that set it off must ride on. Second one to go off in the area in the last month.

Did no one see the footage of the people living in the Condos across the river that saw the flash then felt the boom a second later that was so intense it felt like it lifted their furniture?

Does no one know the sound characteristics associated with setting explosions off that are directed toward a large water surface (not away like mortar fire) combined with low cloud cover and how far that sound can carry?

Evidence, evidence, science. Duh.

There are more conspiracy theorists here than at a JFK convention.

i dont know nothing about pipe bombs but i know about propane tanks as years back my friends had a home made filler hose from the 5 gal tank to the little green tanks and they were drunk or high one or the other and they were filling tanks in the winter with the wood stove going and the hose broke or something and they ran blew the shop to pieces with a crater

well at the time i was a home aproximately 3 miles away and i heard it loud and clear and a slight rattle in the windows (old 64 ft single wide)

so im thinking if it was so big might have had propane involved i just cant see a poweder(only) pipe bomb doing that much damage

Must have been a well built device.

Modern gunpowder reaches about 6000 feet per second. High speed stuff (Not available to the public) would exceed 20,000fps.

The higher the speed, the farther the shockwave will travel thru the atmosphere before it goes sub sonic.

To work make this sorta speed, one must contain huge pressures. Plastic pipe usually will not contain enough pressure before bursting to hit peak speeds for over the counter solid propellants.

The fact that it was near water helps explain to a degree how the sound could travel so far. Conditions must have been perfect, someone got lucky (Pefect storm.... so to speak), or they are doing more than putting some powder in a piece of pvc.

I live on the edge of Gresham and didn't hear it. That being said it seems that for so many people to hear it from so far away it obviously must have been big. I've never messed around with pipe bombs, but did play around with dry ice bombs in the empty parking lot one summer working graveyard shift with some buddies at the only grocery store in town. If it was a pipe type bomb it must have been huge. I guess I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the thought that it was a pipe bomb that made that type of impact. From what some other people have said it sounds like a big enough pipe bomb could have made that big of an explosion? Would this type of device been detonated by a lit fuse? If so, I can only imagine that it must have been a long fuse for the culprit to get far enough away as to not be impacted by the explosion. I'm glad no one was hurt. Hopefully this will be the end of it.
