When I see people fishing for perch off the beach at Pacific City, they usually are using gear heavy enough to land a chinook. Yet the perch I see them bring in rarely exceed 8 inches.

About 40 years ago I used to catch perch off the rocks at boiler bay, then we were using trout gear and it was a riot.

Do you really need that heavy heavy gear?

The reason for that heavy gear is they think that they will cast farther and catch bigger fish with it. I usually see them catch 16 inch fish on that monster gear.

Incoming to high tide. The reason some of us on the south coast use heavy gear is because of the 30 lb striper that may come along.

I usually get a couple every year when perch fishing, if not more.

Incomming and we always looked for the dirty looking water. I don't know what it meant maybe the bottom was turned up uncovering there food but it has worked well for us in the past.
