Is my water pump bad?

1989 Merc 8HP Kicker.

Well I was out yesterday and my fishing buddy next to me noticed the amount of water coming out of the kicker. He thought that my water pump was bad.

It doesnt really shoot out at high velocity, like the big motor, it kind of dribbles. The reason I dont suspect that it is bad is because before I bought it a year ago, the previous owner showed me with service records that it had been replaced recently.

What do you think? Does anyone know the Part Number for the repacement kit (SN OD098578)

If it has a thermostat it will not put out a strong stream when the water is cold. Just a thought.

Is there a safe way to test this? Could I run it in bucket and recycle the water into the bucket (so that it heats up) and monitor the flow? My only thought is that the water would get dirty quick, as it is a 2 stroke.

Impellers are so easy to replace (less than 10 bolts removed and reinstalled) it doesn't make sense not to replace a questionable pump. A quick google search and a basic socket set and you could replace it in a half hour or so.

A quick way to check if the engine is getting proper cooling is to idle it (in the water, not on the fake-a-lake) and touch the engine itself. It should be warm, but not so hot you have to pull your hand off.

Pee holes are easily clogged by insects, grass, and random junk in the water.

all that pee stream is an indicator
most of the water goes out the exhaust
yes t-stat on that and cold water will make a slow pee trail

Take the thermostat housing off and take a look. Or, watch the stream with the motor running. If there is a stat installed the stream will vary as the stat opens and closes.

Another possibility is the pee hole is partially blocked. Insects like the small hole!

Just a quick question for everyone, last night I noticed my 60hp yami wasn't peeing. When I got home I noticed there was mud in the pee hole like everyone says. What is the best way to clear the mud? I stuck a wire in there and mud/water leaked out but not sure how far to stick it in or if I can access the hose from inside the motor cover. I'm at work so I haven't looked since I noticed this last night. Thanks.

You can pop the motor cover off and probably remove the whole hose. Weed whacker line works well, or even just high pressure water from the garden hose will probably do.

My kicker ALWAYS stops peeing. Every trip, usually more than once. I'm not sure what's clogging it, but I just give the pee hole a squirt from the washdown hose and it's back to normal.

Mud is sure sign of those critters. Just pull the cover and check the
hose. They don't travel to far.
