Default Catarafts

Anyone have advice on these things? They look pretty fun. There is a huge difference in prices on the "outback" brand: $300-$1600. Somebody here had a little quote like "friends dont let friends row outbacks" or something to that nature. Who was that guy? What is a good cataraft?

Well, that would be me. I have owned a few different catarafts/pontoon boats. Well, depending on what type of waters you plan to fish, really dictates on what type of boat you want to buy. Outcasts are good boats, but are very restrictive on where you can take them. I've run about most type of cats/pontoon boats out there. I have a 16ft Aire Cataraft and a 9ft Skookum Steelheader. Both are whitewater rated and are a kick to float.

When it comes to cats, you get what you pay for. If you're looking for a boat for lakes and VERY mild rivers, go for an outcast/bucks bag. You can even get one of the ODC's they have out. I'd highly suggest going with at least an Aire, if not up to a Wing. I'll tell you this, you're gonna pay roughly as much for a good cat/frame combo as you will for a driftboat. You'll have alot more fun with a cat (at least in my opinion). You can even go to NRS and Clavey and get some decent packages (which are mailorder catalogs and at least NRS has a homepage at http://www.NRSweb.com )

Next you'll have to figure out how many people do you want to use on your cat. If you only want a single person cat, run a 9/10 ft. If you want to take 2 or more, then look at the larger cats. My 16ft will handle 4 people no sweat. There's the monsters at 18ft if you really want some boat, but it's a bit overkill unless you plan to float some really big water.

You can email me if you have any questions. You can also get in touch with Osprey, he'll help you out too.

Good luck and keep me posted....Jerry

Thanks, I checked out the website you provided. It was pretty informative. I didn't realize how much those things could cost!! Maybe I'll stick with the ol drift boat for a while. I would probaly need a 2- man if I was gonna try one because nobody I know has one. Anyway thanks again for your help.
