Default 2017 Spring Bear with the ol' 30-30

I decided this winter that my goal this Spring was to kill a nice Spring bear with my 30-30 and film it so I would be able to relive it when I am too old to get after them anymore. This season started off terrible with all the cold rain so I have only been out a handful of times until yesterday. It finally felt like Spring bear hunting time so I headed into one of my favorite spots to hunt. I've only ever seen 2 other Spring bears in there but it always feels like I have had a good hunt when it's over so that was my pick.

I just barely got into the swamp I chose to hunt when I spotted black among all the lush green. Right away I set up the cam which was already on and ready to roll. I was getting some really good footage of him (I thought!) while I was sizing him up from about 100 yards. He fed behind a clump of alders and I was getting nervous he would slip off like the only other bear I have seen did this Spring so I backed the camera off to have a wide angle and started slipping forward to find a clear angle. Once I got about 30 yards in front of the camera he presented a clear shot I took a 70 yard offhand shot and dropped him in his tracks! I was super pumped to have been able to get myself in the field of view and make the shot or so I thought... When I got back to the tri pod and went to pause the camera I realized it was on pause. Apparently I was more excited than I thought......blew the filming of a good bear with the 30-30 but the good thing is I already know what my 2018 Spring bear goal will be.

Turned out to be a fine boar! Not huge but really respectable. It was all I could do to drag him back a few feet out of the pool of blood for a pic. Probably around 300#'s but that is just a guess. Long night last night but luckily my son and his buddy came in and gave me a hand. Really looking forward to next Spring!

Good luck to all still hunting! I think they are gonna start dropping like flies....

Impossible. The only thing that has less knock down power than a .30-30 is a 7/08 musta just dies of natural causes simultaneously

Nice job, Joe

I just love spending time in cool places in the Spring. Turns out big black bears do too. Just a lucky coincidence really.

Nice job, Joe
Thanks Wil! I guess it's just a matter of luck to be able to kill stuff without a real gun. I've always said I'd rather be lucky than good.

It's a Leupold FXII 2.5x28mm IER Scout. I'm not going to impress anybody with my long range ability but it's a killing machine for Western Oregon hunting.

The last three years I have been holding just a tad high to what most people would do at all yardages. 2015 was at 425 yards......all I could see after recoil was paws in the air. Last year was about 160 if I remember right.....you can see the steam come out of the entry...

https://youtu.be/FGU6nLXqi90

this year was 70 or so. 2014 I put it center of the lungs and ended up with a blood trail into the brush right at dark....spent a long night wondering and found him in the dark about 4:00 am. Not something I want to do often so I changed my plan of attack.

I would describe it as the very top of the kill zone.....possibly a little sketchy if placement is high at all but I shoot enough and stay well within my means so I know where the bullet is gonna hit. I really don't enjoy blood trailing bears in the dark in the thick brush that surrounds every spot I hunt. Just take out their spine. Nothing high tech here...

Thanks Ron! There isn't any mystery here. I work, I come home, I cook dinner for my wife and send her on her way to walk the dog on the beach. I grab my stuff and head out for some time in the hills. I keep the wind right and move quietly. When I see a bear I assume it's a dink until it proves me wrong. Once that happens I shoot the bear. I'm just a really lucky guy in more ways than one.

Definitely do it! Joe pointed me in the right direction as to what I needed to set my 94 the same way, and it has quickly become my favorite gun. I even took it over east a few weeks ago to get a bear with it, but Joe's luck hasn't rubbed off yet! My buddy and I did however kill a rock and a mushroom with it at 584 yards! By the way, nice bear Joe!

Nice! I hope to bring home the sausage over east for the last of the season. I take some spit for having a 3x9 on my 30-30 but nobody argues with the results

Lived in Montana a few years and spring bear hunting was a hoot. We saw ton's of bears. Graduated high school in Monmouth, Ore. Spent a lot of time up in Black Rock and up around Valsetz. Even lived in Valsetz a couple years. I've lived in Oregon well over 50 yrs but I have only ever seen two bears in all those years! I must not hold my mouth right!
