I've gotten a few big boys on little line. But my bigest would probably have to be an upper 20s springer on my 4wt flyrod with a 6lb tippit. I too was fishing for the fiesty spotted trout on the lower trask. I watched mathewc land one on his 3wt:o

Maannyy years ago, we would fish the Trask right after the first rain. The river was still at very low levels, but we usually got into a ton of Fall Nooks. It became a game to see how big a nook we could get on the lightest line. We would rig up with a small swivel and tie on a leader and no weight. We would tie off the boat to trees in the deep holes, and cast out a gob of eggs, and let it free drift through the hole. This would always produce results. My personal best was a 38# nook on 6# test Maxima. It was a ton of fun, especially when the fish would tow the whole boat through the hole. My friend Mike's best was a 42# nook on 6# test Maxima.

Needless to say we lost more fish than we were able to land.

21"+ Rainbow in the Deschutes on 4lb test. It was when I first moved out here. I had no idea trout could get that big in a river so I figured 4lb test was enough. I have no idea what it weighed though I just measured and released it. Not the most impressive by any means compared to what some of the others have posted but it is my personal best.

OK, I had to add one here. It probably isn't the biggest for the lightest line, but I was proud.
I landed a 69" sturgeon on the Snake river with my steelhead rod using 10# line. It took well over an hour to land, then was quickly released. No pictures to show, I didnt have a digital camera back then.
Anyway, I was trying to catch a catfish, after catching lots of trout, bass and steelhead, but I hooked into this big 'ol sturgeon!

My first steelhead ever was caught while trout fishing on the McKenzie River on 4# line, size 10 hook, and a single Pautzke egg. I was fortunate that a drift boater saw the action and came to assist. I am unsure of the weight, but the length was 32". It was probably the most memorable fish I have ever landed.

Twice (in the same spot, five years apart) a sturgeon on a walleye spinner. First time it was 6' long on 10 lb leader and 12 lb mainline, second time it was 6-1/2' long on 12 lb leader and 30 lb braid. I've always wondered if it was the same fish... similar fight and the exact same spot. Here's a pic from the one this summer... it was just the kids with me on the boat so I couldn't get a pic when I had it stretched out in the water by the boat.

Last year was a banner year for me on "the" river, over 60 steelies, feb through may mostly nates all on the same spool of 8lb maxima chameleon and 8lb and 10 lb vanish flouro leader 3 of those fish were over twenty pounds one at 24.7

even my 8 yr old put 7 steelies on his tag, with 8 lb test(tied his own knots and hooked the fish himself from the bank) he landed one around 15 lbs

decided to challenge myself and went with a ultra light fenwick trout rod with 4lb chameleon maxima landed two in april and a couple more in july

60# plus king on 10# tippet, 6 wt fly rod in 1975, Kalama River. 25 minute fight, spooled to the knot and it held. But had to let it go, because i was fishing for steelhead and you couldn't keep Chinook above the bridge.

I hooked into a 50 plus salmon high on the Wilson on a bobber and jig on 12lb main 10lb test took my brother and I close to a 1.5 hrs to get him in got half the fight on video camera. The proudest I have ever been of myself for letting such a beautiful fish swim free. I don't know why but I revived him and watched him swim away.

chalk up another 60+ lber on a fly rod. I got a big nasty buck on 8lb ultragreen tippet 4 years ago...I was catching half pounder steelhead when I hooked into the pig. I'll never forget trying to pick up that fish. It was ugly, but every bit over 60#.
have landed a couple steelhead over 16 on 6lb tip...i usually run a 6 lb tip regardless...I wonder how many I have lost over 20 that were because of me being stubborn and not using 12lb line...hmmmm.

I don't know where to start. I've caught around a dozen tules over 25 lbs some as big as 45 lbs each on my 9 weight fly rod w/ 10 or 12 lb maxima leaders. I've caught many, many, sturgeon over 300 lbs on 80 lb tuff line. I've caught lots of big carp up to about 10 lbs on an ultralite w/ 4 lb maxima. I would have to say that the best was a springer about 28 lbs on 10 lb maxima from a float tube.

Try to guess what my favorite brand of line is.

In late April of1965 I was fishing for trout in the Willamette near Harrisburg and hooked into a springer. Once I saw what I had hooked I checked my watch to see how long before I lost it with my cheap 6lb line.
I was still in high school and had walked up to a gravel bar about a mile above town, after shcool. I chased that thing all over and when it sulked I would tap the metal cap on my rod butt with a rock to get it moving again. Amazingly enough after awhile I had it by my feet but the fish was still swiming upright, so I threw a rock beside it and away she went again. Finally after one more long run I pulled the fish up to my feet and this time it was laying on it's side, I was able to grab the gills and tail and get it out onto the bank. I checked my watch again and the fight had lasted 37 minutes. It was a long way back home carrying a mint bright 22lb, but the smile never left my face.

Several 30+ springers on the Wilson in the early / mid 70's when there was a decent run - 6 lb maxima. 61'' sturgeon on 10lb fishing for walleye. That was a blast.

Personal bests are a 6ft sturgeon on 6 lb. line while fishing walleye below Priest Rapids dam. 37 lb springer on 4 lb. test in Alaska. In the boat, we have done lots of oversize sturgeon in the Hanford reach on 20 to 30 lb. line when fishing fall run.

6 1/2 foot sturgeon on 8 lbs. maxima side-drifting for summers at Hellar Bar in 2001. Took around 30-45 minutes I think, never did look at my watch. Drew quite the crowd when he went air born 3 times! I'll never forget what my old man told me when he knew what I hooked, "You break it, you bought it son!" In refrence to his brand new Loomis i was using. The fish was landed and the rod/reel held strong.

30+lb. Chinook on 4lb maxima leader and 8lb. maxima main line with a 10.5 Noodle rod. We were fishing for Chums so I thought I'd test the rod to see what it would handle and how small of a leader I could use. I was quite surprised. Later on I saw a show that had a your gild around 12 years old in Alaska where they were doing essentially the same this but were vying for world line class records. I believe she caught something in the 25lb class on 6lb line that was recorded as a record.

Mine was a 15 or so pound springer on 4# maxima fishing a trout pole for cutts 20 years ago.

My best though was my 85# Black lab that decided to grab my jig as I was tying on a bobber stop on the line. Man that one fought hard ,amazing jumps and runs. BTW it was 8# leader.....

Estimated 60lb, it was 58" long, Ling on 12lb Maxima UG.
We were mooching for silvers and it took my herring and ran straight to the bottom. Luckily the bottom was 2' shallower than the amount of line on the reel. It took a lot of pulling and I thought the rod was going ot explode, but she finally came to the top and we got a quick measurement and release.
Friends wife videoed the whole thing so I get to relive it anytime I want.

Second would be a 112lb halibut on 25lb. Gamma. We were trolling for kings when this slab grabbed the little Coyote spoon I had on. Lots of fun fighting a fish like that in onlt 40 ft of water.

BTW, same rod/reel caught both fish, Rainshadow 1024 and ABU 6500C3, 2 years apart.

Kind of out of the same realm, but ours is a 450 lb black Marlin on 50 lb Trilene Big Game. Not quite a 10/1 ratio but close enough and if you have ever caught a big Marlin, you understand why that is a challenge. It requires a small enough boat to chase down the marlin to get some line back before you get spooled.

N Santiam in 2000, a (my guess ) 25lb springer. Fishing 12lb main and 8lb leader, it picked up a small blue corkie and pink yarn.

When I hooked up, I was pretty sure it was a springer and not the steelhead I was fising for. I timed the fight at over 20 minutes. It was one of the best fish battles I have had, taking my time and trying not to break it off.

It's a toss up for me. In Lake Merwin I caught a 38" tiger muskie on a meps spinner with 6# eagle claw trout line while trolling for trout. I somehow managed to get him into the net without cutting my line with those razor sharp teeth. However those sharp teeth did manage to thrash my inexperenced musky handeling hands. My other big fish on light line was a seven foot plus strurgeon on 15# softlimp maxima on a boat near Beacon rock.

121" sturgeon on 30lbs big game from the bank. Since then, which was 6 years ago I've only targeted oversized once and don't plan to do it ever again. So, most likely, that fish will be the largest I ever catch.

6lbs Bonita on a 4'2" ultra lite with 4lb Fenwick lite line trolling a 6" Rapala broken back from a canoe off of Redondo Beach CA. 20 minute fight. For those who don't know what Bonita is it's a small TUNA!

5'6" Leopard Shark on 17lbs test in San Francisco Bay. 2 hours to land!

85# Yellowfin tuna on 20# P-Line off of Mexico on the Red Rooster II. Yes, the arms were a little sore after that. Could only lift 12 ounces at a time for the next few minutes.

I used to catch many springers every year on the Santiam on 6 pound maxima leader. I would be after summers but some of those nooks went 20 # easy.

70lb+ king caught on good ole' maxima ultragreen 8lb test. My dad and I were fishing for clear water coho on the Kanektok river in Alaska. Saw the big chrome king come right out of now where and slam my fly in 4ft of water! Insane, because I first thought I had just hooked into the new world record coho, because this king was soo bright for being so late in the season for kings. Took 35-40min to land that beast on a 7wt flyrod on 8lb test, and I am never going to forget that fish! Released it, since the indians did not allow us to keep the fish, only catch and release.

Back in the late 60's and early 70's, I belonged to a group called the Portland Spin fishing club. We all used to fish light line on just about every species. We would get pins for catching a fish that was twice the weight of the line test. It made it a lot of fun.

One of our members caught a 36# Chinook on the Trask on 4# test. It was neat to watch.

We would use 1# Test with a jig made of a #6 hook, white yarn and a split shot for shad. Talk about a fight. I caught several in the 5# size. It was like fishing for Tarpon.

Sadly the club disbanded and many went their different ways. I still enjoy fishing bass with light line but no more 1# test for me.

Bank fishing at Bonneville for springers 16lb test, 12lb leader on a spinglo with a prawn tail, somehow got 6 1/2 foot sturgeon to the bank. He rolled at the surface shortly after setting the hook and everybody thought it was cool.
