Buzz - thank you for the advice on bank fishin these lures. I've had 3 misses with these lures back trolling on the Willy. What is the preferred hook set method with these? Do you sit on your hands like btrolling bait? Set the hook right away? Thanks for any advice.

Here's a note from Bob on how he's using Mag Lip as a bait diver:

"Here are some photos of Gary Bamber of Canby, Oregon with a limit of
Clackamas River Summer Steelhead caught today on eggs behind a 4.5
Maglip used as a bait diver.

The 4.5 Maglip makes a great bait diver. It fishes water depth and
current speed similar to a Mud Bug or Magnum Hot N Tot except it has
the skip beat action which, as we know, is a nice fish attractor. I have been
using them this spring on the Clackamas for Spring Chinooks and Summer
Steelhead in water less than 15 feet deep...The skip beat action seems
to really help, although it still makes me and my clients jump each time
we see it happen....."

For salmon, if you are back-trolling with an unwrapped (no sardine fillet) Mag Lip, I would likely set the hook as the rod bottoms out the first time. With a Mag Lip wrapped with a fillet of sardine, I'd wait on setting the hook (don't move the rod) and set the hook when the rod bottoms out the third (3) time.
If you are back-trolling Mag Lip, or any other plug style, for steelhead I would always set the hook as the rod bottoms out the first time.
