Albacore bit as close as 31 miles off Point Loma yesterday, just in time for the assault by weekend fishermen.

Bob Vanian, the voice and researcher behind 976-BITE, said yesterday was the best albacore day of the young fishing season.

"It was a breakthrough day, really," said Vanian, who operates his fish report service and Web site (www.976bite.com) from his home in Point Loma Heights on a bluff above Ocean Beach. "It was just a super good bite. Most of the boats called in limits of albacore by midday."

Vanian took reports from anglers on private boats fishing 31 miles from Point Loma. He said boats reported catching fish from 31 miles southwest to 50 miles southwest of Point Loma, with the main headings being between 195 degrees and 210 degrees off Point Loma.

"It's a big spread of fish," Vanian said. "From just outside the 371 to below the 390 Bank.

The sportfishing fleet also was in on the scores, with the Dolphin II (captain Tim Voaklander) out of Islandia Sportfishing reporting limits of albacore (80), along with 35 yellowtail and one bluefin tuna for 16 anglers.

Captain Ray Sobieck of the Producer out of H&M Landing had 80 albacore and 10 yellowtail for 30 anglers.

The Prowler, with captain Buzz Brizendine and 28 fishermen out of Fisherman's Landing, had 84 albacore and six yellowtail early in the afternoon. The Condor had 70 albacore and five yellowtail for 16 anglers. And the Legend, with captain Shawn Trowbridge out of Seaforth Sportfishing in Mission Bay, had 82 albacore and 12 yellowtail for 21 anglers.

Boats on 11/2-day runs out of Fisherman's Landing fared just as well, with the Pegasus scoring limits of albacore (35) and 12 yellowtail for its seven anglers. And the Pacific Queen, with 25 anglers, had 95 albacore and 16 yellowtail.
