Lion charge!
Some of you may have seen this already, it has been posted on other websites. It shows an African lion charging the hunter after being shot. Turn up the sound, it increases the pucker factor!!! It takes several minutes to download on Windows Media Player, but well worth the wait.

Re: Lion charge!
Holy.... that was a close call. It could easily turned very bad. Shots going off everywhere, and a hunrt lion. You can't tell how large and powerful the lion is until you see him right next to the hunters. Thanks sliverpicker that was an awsome clip.

Holy bat-whiff! Why the heck didn't they take him at the beginning of the clip? I'm surprised that they didn't shoot each other with all the close-quarter shooting.

If ever there was a time to make sure you used MORE than enough fire power and that your shot is on, dangerous game would have to be it.
Pretty amazing though.

Re: Lion charge!
I couldn't get the link to come up but I have to say without seeing it: What's the point? Someone finds pleasure in killing an animal that is just trying to make it from one day to the next. It isn't something the hunter reguired for food to survive.
What's the the point? It is a sad need that some people have to kill just for the thrill of killing. Nothing to eat, a dead beautiful animal, for nothing but a picture.
Tell me, what justifies this type of slaughter?

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Well, someone could say that about any animal that's killed. I think that someone was just trying to share an interesting video clip with the reset of us.
No offense, but there are many members of this board who are hunters - both trophy and subsistence (I personally tend to fall into both categories). Don't be surprised if you get pounced on for voicing this view. Just a heads-up.

I agree with FARM 5 he said it well .I have hunted for years , but only for things I would eat . It!s to bad people feel the need to kill animals that will be extinct in the near future because of mans need to boost his ego .

Re: Lion charge!
My point is that there have been so many posts in which someone was just trying to share something - and someone has to turn it into a philosophical or political debate.
BTW - I know several people who have gone on African Safari trophy hunts. Virtually all of the meat went to local tribes and there was very little waste. FWIW.

Re: Lion charge!
Hunting safari's are big business in Africa. It provides much needed employment and revenue for the locals. Much of the animals are utilized by the local citizens, the rest is sold on the legal market, hence putting a damper on the wholesale poachimg problem many areas contend with.
I shoot crows that pass over our porperty on a regular basis, but I wouldn't even think about eating one.
I look at it this way. If some non-resident wants to spend $75000 to $100,000 on an Oregon Bighorn sheep auction tag, no money out of my pocket. But with the revenue that generates, it might possibly increase my chance's of actually drawing a sheep tag some day.
To each his own!

Re: Lion charge!
This is the good part. Just because somebody doesn't hunt they think their opinion is the right one. As if the peaceful, non-violent response is inherantly truer. I love it when people start thinking they know so much. Maybe he is clarvoyant and KNOWS that not one bit of that lion was eaten. Personally I would lay money that the "locals" know what to do with just about every part of a lion. I'm sick and tired of people telling other people how they should live. God bless America and free speech.

Re: Lion charge!
#1. African Lions are far from threatened and in some areas over abundant.
#2. Hunting brings in much need revenue and many jobs.
#3. If you don’t like hunting lions then don't hunt them. Otherwise shut up.
#4. If you hunt lions use enough rifle and shoot straight.
It looked to me like this hunter was using a .30 or smaller rifle (judging it by barrel size and recoil). They were lucky that someone didn't get hurt or killed. Makes me glad I own several .375's.

Re: Lion charge!
That is pretty amazing footage.
On the other note.
The populations of game animals in Africa are decreasing. Except..............
In the areas where they allow hunting. The reason is, is those areas that allow hunting have what? MONEY!!
They have money to have rangers and game wardens policing the areas. They do not have a problem with poachers. The areas that do not allow hunting, do not have money, do not have rangers and HAVE poachers.
Like someone said earlier. The tribes use the meat. From what I understand, even the prey animals (antelope ect.) get donated to the local tribes.
What about catch and release fishing? Rip their lips off and then let them swim away and starve to death?

Some people do eat these I am sure but there is no law saying you have to.

And we wonder why we can't hunt with dogs anymore or bait bears any more. When we as sportsmen and women can't even get on board with each other. Great video man and like has already been said I'm sure hope he had an extra pair and probably an extra pair to go around.
As far as a couple of folks on this post shame on you as you are not doing the sport of hunting any favors. I for one hear lion is very tastey. I have had moutain Lion and it was great.

Re: Lion charge!
If that film actually took place in South Africa, then the hunter had to be "dangerous game certified" in order to hunt lion legally. Beside some basic animal autonomy knowledge and the proven ability to shoot, some general rules, if I recall, are that lions are to be shot between 50 yards and 100 yards and there in a caliber minimum. The shooter failed drastically here. The hunter is taught that on dangerous animals, the shooter absolutely must break up some bone. That doesn't appear to be the case. He should have waited for a better shot or just got the hell out of there.
Having had the privilege to live in Africa for some years, I use to listen to the horror stories told by professional hunters about what an enraged lion can do with little effort to a human. Those guys are lucky. All of them. Professional shooters both one and two also failed miserably.

As far as the non hunting community goes why are you even looking at a hunting board. Go back to your fly fishing only stream with your nice suit and enjoy yourself while leaving us alone.

I would be willing to bet that the increase in harvest has more to do with increased cougar populations than increased hunting presure. Until this legislation was passed, I can only remember seeing one cougar in the wild. In the past 5 years I have seen 8 cougars. I do not believe that cougars have become less warry since the hound ban.
With regards to the comments from Farm5; If there is no law against it then what difference does it make. If such an activity was harmful to the populations and or cruel and inhumane then there would be a law against it. And yes, some people do enjoy whacking varmits for no good reason, save for the fact that they are lower on the food chain. I for one am a staunch believer in profound carnage! Just don't waste your wild "game" meat.

Re: Lion charge!
Reminds me of that Howard Hill video "Tembo" where he kills a lion, elephant, baboon and just about every other animal on the continent but with a traditional longbow. Just a waste of animals, but at least it was slightly sporting, one guy, no help and no guns.
By the way, who in their right mind would ever eat a cat? Well maybe if I was starving...wait, no I think I'd rather starve, yeah I'd rather starve .

Well to the bleeding hearts, no animal has ever been SPORT HUNTED to extinction, ever.
I have no desire to shoot a Lion, but have no problem with someone who does. I never had a desire to kill a bear or cougar in Oregon until the bleeding hearts passed their protection law thereby taking game management away from game managers. I sure will/do whack 'em now.
Hunters and their money have been the one viable source of resource protection for game animals all over the world for the last 100 years.
The travesty of MARKET HUNTING has been recognized and fought by sport hunters.
In Africa, all hunting is highly regulated and the fees for the highly sought game are huge. Those fees pay to protect all game species.
Definitely should have broke down his shoulders with the first shot. The PH got a round in that took him out of his stride just before he struck. I'd say the PH saved the guy. Way too close for comfort, but they call it dangerous game for a reason.
And oh buy the way, a friend who went to a sci banquet said African Lion is actually quite good to eat, no that it matters ethically one way or the other.
Thanks for the link.
