Arrow My homemade goose decoys: Updated

Made some Goose decoys for next season, what do you all think? Anything I should improve on (I know the stakes are a little high but I hunt in the mud so the stakes are going to go in 6-7 inches deeper in the mud)? Sorry if the pics are bad, they are cellphone pictures.
The fourth pic shows the hole maker I made for the stakes.
Cant wait till early season

Bodies need to be darkened up on the upper half. To light. Do you have any samples to work off of? Otherwise they should work.

Hmm, what color should I use or the upper back/ wing area?
I'm planning on make 2-3 dozen of them, to go with 8 bigfoot sentries I have and a dozen shells.

So I don't hunt geese and don't know a lot about it, but I do know from reading Ifish that you can't kill any geese if you don't have at least $1K in DSD's.

Seriously, though, how cool would it be to kill geese over decoys you made yourself? Somewhere between catching a trout on a fly you tied yourself and shooting a deer with a longbow you made yourself, I guess. Quite an accomplishment if you can do it!

Those will work; nice! Only suggestion I have, to make the spread look more realistic develop a few different head positions; feeding, sentinel, resting.

Google search "black and white silhouette goose decoys"

If you are gonna go simple, black and whites will do the trick.

I think the creativity is great and am taking nothing away from you for trying.
I am also not poking at you for not buying expensive decoys.
I would look at pictures of the type of geese you are trying to shoot and make the decoys look like them.

I freaking LOVE homemeade decoys! I can't wait to hear about your first hunt over them! I would darken up the bodies- I can't give you any more or any detailed advice as I have learned the hard way that decoy makers read these threads and for some unknown reason seem to make whatever changes I suggest Congrats on a nice job and good hunting! There was a time, not that long ago, when DSD's were home made decoys. Most of us didn't start with full bodies of any kind.

All of the advise given is spot on. They'll work with some modifications.

Allright thanks guys for the compliments and suggestions . I will darken the wings and post a picture of what they look like, It might be a week or two until I get to it though, And I'll make another dozen in black and white and put them in the back of the spread, but that'll be awhile, some jerk stole my jigsaw so imma have to look for another

If you want to add feather details to the top of the decoy after you darken them up you can make a stencil and spray them on. Cardboard works, but the thin Teflon cookie sheets are the ticket. You can pick them up at the dollar store and draw the marks with a permanent marker then cut them out with a exacto knife. This can be picked up in the model section, hobby shops, etc. I used to use a lot of silos back in the day and as fillers. The more pressure an area has and areas where guys use high end decoys the birds become more educated and it becomes more of a challenge to finish the birds. If you are a good shot and can get them to swing over the spread, you can still get good shots if they are within reason.

Nice work, I made three dozen out of plywood with the help of my grandpa many moons ago, he ran the saw and I did the painting. Very rewarding when you see a few fall for them, keep at it they will produce!

I made a feather stencil, should I just use that and paint a darker tan on it for wings and call it good, or should I actually darken the upper wings?

It does my heart good to see a guy take the bull by the horns and make his own deeks. Just like anything else, the more practice ya get doing them, the better they will turn out. There's nothing like the feeling of watching a flight of birds drop down over something you built from scratch, regardless of what anyone else thinks.

Work your darker colors in and use them like you stole them! Good on ya Bud

If you want to get wild and crazy you flock the heads and tails of the silos!

All you need is flat black and flat white. They will work better than detailed silos..
Many times in late season I switch from a set of fully flocked averies to the black and whites and have improved results.

Darken the top half of them and most important put them where the geese want to be. Last day of the goose season I was hunting over ten dozen DSD's in an extremely active flyway and we still couldnt get the geese to come in. yeah yeah....It's not the decoys fault, it's mine for not scouting hard enough but it really made me realize that location is the most important part of late season goose hunting not the small fortune in decoys we had out in front of us.

A guy i know Tie wrapped/wire wrapped real goose wings onto the sides of his Silo's. Kind of like a poor mans stuffer.

If folks out east can hunt with socks, milk jugs, pie plates and the like, im sure these will work.

How does this look?
Should the brown go all the way down to the white?
Does it need feather detail or will that be enough?

I would bring that brown down to about the stake and then back Leave the grey in the breast area. If you have time and want to adding some feather details wouldnt hurt IMHO. If you dont like your work when done, just repaint the brown Maybe try and feather the colors together just a tad so they dont have such a distinct line.

The best advice I could give you is forget what we tell you and google up some good pics of geese and try to match them as close as you can. Look at a goose- do you see a sharp line separating a deep, dark rich brown color from a slate gray? If not, then make those adjustments. There's no magic color that will kill geese if that's what you're looking for- the more realistic a decoy looks, the better it will work. DS

If the guys on Yukon Men can build goose decoys from mud on the ground and kill honkers you definitely can with those. Good improvements, just keep it up and take the advice that's been given here already.

I agree with you guys the straight line wasn't very good, I'm really trying to make these nice, I made a feather stencil is this better? Do you think the brown stands out to much?

Don't over think it to much. You don't have to make the bars on the goose solid dark. You can fade them in as well to give it a more realistic look. Consider a slight color change with the grey you are using as you take a look at some of the pictures guys have posted up. You can also look in a Cabelas, Wing & Supply, DU, Wildfowl, Delta Fowl or other waterfowl books for additional detail an then compare them to what you have. That will help you on the detail. Good luck.

Some people like to critique but few have ever tried to make their own decoys. Painting decoys IMHO is FAR from easy. Personally think they look pretty darn good ... One thing I like to do with home made decoys is get them out in real sunlight and do the 20, 50, and 150 yard eye test. I always like to do this with my decoys. We tend to always look at decoys "in hand" or very close. When we do this we can find all kinds of flaws. It's only outside at the distances I have above that you can get a feel for what they really look like.

Head out to a local park/field and set up a couple and take pictures at those distances. I bet you get a different idea of how they really look.

Cheers,

Adam
