Default How fast before your depth finder doesn\'t work ?

We have had our Intruder just shy of two months now and whenever we get on plane the depth finder goes out to lunch. We had the dealer install it so it would be done correctly. So the question is can you get on plane and keep reading the depth ok? Is this normal or do I need to get the dealer to move the transducer to a less turbulent spot?

I did see in the Lowrance specifications that the transducer is supposed to be good to 70mph.

Thanks for the insight.

I am yet to find the perfect spot on any of the boats I have owned.None of them would work once I got up and moving. I am sure there are some on here, that will say different, But I havent even been in a boat that the fishfinder worked while the boat was up and running. I am sure there is that perfect spot though, As long as you want all the holes in your boat trying to find it Good luck

You might check the angle of the transducer. The bottom needs to angle slightly forward and be slightly below the bottom of the boat so it catches "clean" (no bubbles) water. Just my $.02........

Got a lorance x-85, use it on 2 different boats never have a problem at any speed or depth. Indicated speed up to 50mph on 1 boat and 40mph on the other, I installed both transducers myself. Look for a clean spot from the hull, no chines and make sure it is in the water and level by about 1/2 the thickness of the transducer when running (assuming you are using a skimming transducer). I have heard that roughing up the transducer face (the one in the water) helps, but I have not needed to do it.

Never had a problem with reading depths at any speed.
Don't know what but something isn't right with the setup.

I was told that running your depthfinder on dry land is a no no and can fry your transducer and cause all sorts of weird readings (solid line of fish marks, rapidly fluctuating depth readings, etc).

My Bottom Line does the same thing SK as soon as I'm on step. I plan to go to a Lowrance for that and other reasons.

Mine always quit at anything over an idle, if it worked at all that is! Usually, when I REALLY needed it, the darn thing wouldn't work at all.

Try turning up the speed the DF reads at.

Mine seems to work well unless i am in shallow water! When I run the Sandy the depth finder is all but worthless, unless drifting or at an idle.

It usually has to do with the angle of the transducer. It can get bumped out of adjustment by just about anything.

Thanks everyone,

It looks like I want to make sure the setup is correct before I get the dealer to move the transducer around. I will check some of the settings this weekend.SK

If the dealer you mention is Steven's Marine maybe the same guy that installed my transducer installed yours!

The problem I had with mine was because the transducer was not adjusted low enough, thankfuly I didn't need to drill more holes in the transom. Loosen the two screws that hold the transducer mounting bracket and slide it down so that the face (bottom) of the transducer is 1/2' below the bottom of the boat. The advice above regarding tilting the transducer to the front rather than the back is right on also.

One other thing that was incorrect when my transducer was installed....Make sure that the rubber washers are insalled correctly and that the bolt that holds the transducer into the bracket is not so tight that the transducer can't flip up if something hits it.

I'll still lose my bottom reading on occasion at high speeds or on a sharp turn, but I figure if I'm going WOT that bottom would come up to meet me before I could shut it down anyway.

Mine used to do this and I moved it about 6 inches to some cleaner water and it's never had a problem since. Lowrance X-85 - stable up to at least 140 mph.

Get a through hull transducer or glue your transducer to the inside of your hull.

It sounds to me like the dealer didn't install your transducer properly. The transducer should be below the bottom of your hull and tipped slightly down on the trailing end. It should also be located in a disturbance free area.

This is how mine are located. In the river they still read at WOT,47, in the sound to about 180' at 38mph, and in the Pacific in 300' at about 30mph.

18 ft intruder 175 SJ

Humminbird Panorama = about 35 MPH
Note: shallow water confused this FF anything under 8 ft would give multiple bottoms as it bounced off the bottom of my boat

Lowrance LCX 18c = Unknown.... never lost the bottom
Note: Bottom detail deteriorates significantly at higher speeds. Mounting location is EXACTLY where my prior Humminbird was.

Just about all of the brands will work at high speeds if you mount the transducer just right, and just about all of them will fail if they're not just right. My bottomline works at full speed (60 mph) but I had to tweak it a few times by pushing down at the rear of the transducer to get the angle just right.
