It will probably be great for getting a closer look at things you can see with the naked eye or binoculars. But using it to pick out animals or parts of animals at a distance might be a stretch.
You might be pleasantly surprised with that. You won't really know until you try it for yourself. As it happens any time you ask for opinions, you'll get a lot of varying responses. Some folks on here think you have to spend 400 dollars on fishing rod and 1500 dollars on binos, and while I will admit you can get some pretty snazzy stuff for that money, you hardly NEED it and can do just fine with less expensive things.
I personally like Celestron glass. They make stuff mainly for stargazing, but the clarity and quality gets close to upper end brands for a fraction of the cost. The down side is that their stuff is heavy compared to optics made for hunters/hunting, so if pack weight is a concern, probably not for you. I use the heavy stuff for scouting and have a small pair of Nikons that go in my pack.
