I hunted an area that I threaded about 2 weeks ago last Sunday.
Got to where I had spooked a herd of elk a weekend prior and was just lookin around for activity. When I noticed a trail headed up a very steep hill. I started from the bottom of the saddle I was in and worked my way up the hill. Which was just filled with elk sign feces and tracks on a very beaten down trail. With my Winchester 30-06 rifle in hand I scaled the hill, and peaked over the crest. Making quite a bit of noise going up hill menuevering through giant ferns, downed trees, and dense poplar growth. I didn't expect to find anything. I kicked over a huge pile of fresh elk dung, when a large doe jumped up from the ferns just below me on the other side of the ridge I had crested. Disappointed that it was just a doe I started working my way down the ridge when up jumped a nice 3x3 and was bounding down the dense wooded incline. I menuvered for a shot, but was having a hard time getting a clear view In my scope. All I could see was the top of his head, so I aimed just down from the top of the skull and depressed the trigger. After firing I saw the deer disappeared over the crest of the ridge. I stopped walking and just listened to hear for his feet pounding the ground and the crashing of brush. Hearing absolute silence I thought I might hv been successful. Walking towards where I saw him disapper I found him leaned up agaisnt a large stump, hit right under the skull severing the spinal column. It was a nasty drag back to the road. Long story short, had to leave the buck to look for the road. Walk 2 miles up hill to my truck. Drive back to the bottomless ridge I hiked off of and hike back up hill to get my buck and finish the job... I worked hard for this guy, not the biggest buck out there but... Well worth the work. Tried to post my pics from my iPhone cuz my computer got a virus, but I can't get it to work. Any suggestions so I can put some pics up? Last edited by danv187; 11-05-2009 at 06:45 PM. |
