OK! This is the one we've been waiting for! This is IMPORTANT!!! We need attendance, here!
Jen SPORT FISHING FORUM Sport fishing opportunity on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers is on the decline and sport anglers are angry. Oregon’s tourism and sport fishing industry are hurting too. The Fish & Wildlife Commission will soon make allocation decisions that will impact us for years to come. It’s Time for Change! All of you are well aware that the current allocation between sport and commercial in Oregon is not equitable, and needs to be fixed. On Sunday, December 4th sports anglers and local businesses will have the opportunity to help educate the following legislators who represent the Clackamas region about the importance of the Columbia River Allocation: Senator Kurt Schrader (D-Canby), Representative Wayne Scott (R-Canby), Representative Scott Bruun (R-West Linn), Representative Dave Hunt (D-Oregon City) and Representative Mike Schaufler (D-Happy Valley) Sport Fishing Forum Oregon City Fisherman’s Marine & Outdoor 1900 SE McLoughlin Blvd Sunday, December 4th, 2005 6:30 - 8:30 P.M. YOU MUST RSVP TO NSIA AT (503) 631-8859

Although this meeting may not require written comments I would like to ask that anyone thinking of sending in comments to ODFW or the Political interests consider doing the following. Insert the following logo into the top left-hand corner of your correspondence
It would be best if you wrote your comments in Word and attached it to the e-mail. Here is a link to a pre-formatted Word file: http://home.comcast.net/~lway3/Ifish_Document.doc Just complete your sentiments, save on your computer, and attach. In this way Staff may not edit out the logo. Also, it would be helpful if you carbon-copied the e-mail to NSIA. That will give then some understanding going into this the amount of leverage they have. (please be aware you will see this post on related threads until the commission meets)

I have helped set up this Forum, so I want to let you know what I was thinking. First, we need to pack this meeting. I figure our store could hold up to 150-200 people. We need to educate our political leaders to what the issue's are and how they can help in those issue's. The sport fishermen have not had politicians that have spoke out LOUDLY for our seasons and needs. We need our local leaders to speak out for their constituates and help get us full seasons. These representative's districts are full of sport fishermen. This is your time to be in contact and let these rep's know that you vote and sport fishing is important to you. We need these rep's to come forward for us NOW , as allocation issue's are decided in the next month. The states want 5 year agreements (not good). These political leaders need to make sure their constituates have 5 years of good seasons, not poor seasons that hurt their area and their area's economies. Please sign up NOW. You don't have to live in Clackamas/Oregon City, just in Oregon and care about sport fishing seasons.

Kudos to you Dan for setting this up as this is a good step in the right direction! What I would like to know, why only legislators from the immediate area. Sure, I realize the close proximity makes it easier for them to attend, but why not get some from the near by areas such as Salem, Albany, Hood River, etc? Even more importantly, while getting one of the attendees to sponsor a or co-sponsor a bill, wouldnt it be nice to get rep's from the committee that will hear it to take this and run with it?? Thanks again!!

As far as other representitives. Our store only has so much room to hold this kind of event. I would suggest that anyone invite their local rep to attend. After looking at this event, I would love to have a second one at our Delta Park store. Rep Gary Hansen is a good friend and likes talking about sport fishing issue's with us. He is from the North Portland area. If we hosted a second event we would expand the group. As far as committees that these reps head, two of them head the ways and means. One in the house and one in the senate. These issues effect them greatly, as to the income and spending of the State. As I have learned, when and if you are trying to pass a bill, it can end up in almost any committee. As far as the RSVP. Again we only have so much room and we have to set up and get ready for this meeting a half hour after we close, in the Christmas season. Also this is a sport fishing meeting to educate the Reps of our issues, that a sport fishing business is sponsoring and facilitating. I want to know who and how many are coming so we can control any situations that may arise. The poster for this event says, Fisherman's reserves the right to remove anyone from this event. That is not to be a a** about it. It is just that we want the sport fishing industry and sport fishermen's issues understood by our State reps with out problems. Thanks for all the interest and hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.

As far as sitting back and complaining, you darn right I will when things don't go the way of the sport fising people..... I have earned the right to complain through my volunteer work and my $$$$$ I have donated to orginizations like NSIA and ANWS...... So I ask you please not to stereotype "Non Involved Anglers" because there are allot of "Involved Anglers" out here...... You know what else I suggest, I suggest we have a big Ifish habitat & restoration day on the river somewhere and see who shows up..... Heck, for that matter why don't we schedule 1 per quarter..... I happen to know a couple of Tillamook District Biologist's and I am sure there are many projects that they can get us all involved with..... Heck, there are also many local projects our biologist do on a weekly basis that they need help on that you can choose what locale and what project you want to get involved with. One that I have been involved with in recent years is Fish specie ID on the N.Fork of Dairy Creek..... Another has been habitat restoration projects on the Trask river as well as Coho spawning ground restoration on the Big Nehalem River..... |

Taking off my moderator hat and speaking only as a member of Ifish:
I think the RSVP has a lot of people put off. I thought about throwing the amperhat into the ring but felt like I should leave it to those who are more well spoken than I, those who have a well-formed opinion and who have a full grounding in the issues. Perhaps others feel the same way: intimidated. Maybe I'm out of line for suggesting this but: For those who choose not to RSVP but still want to show your support, c'mon down! Come stand and show your support for the cause. Then do our kind host the favor of doing a little shopping*** (don't you at least need a pack of hooks for herring rigs for springers?) and be on your merry way. The concern (if I understand it correctly) is with regard to fire ordinances and maximum occupancy of the store. I think a steady stream of folks coming through, listening to part of the discussion then buying something will send a message to the governmental representatives in attendance. *** This is in no way an advertisement for FMS. They were kind enough to host the event for us and I feel that we should show our appreciation for the use of their space by making a purchase, no matter how small. If it is a successful event, perhaps there could be more. Also, we as sportfishers have traveled to where the events have been held this year and it appears to be paying off. Through this unique opportunity, the event is coming to us. The main theme of our argument is the economic benefits of sportfishing to the region and hearing cash registers ring all night will enforce that theme. |

I will be there, and I will speak on behalf of all sportfishers. We as a group are, large in numbers, but way under represented, when it comes to our share of the fish pie. Hey Thumper, I'll make the call for you. ![]() salmon hugger

Amp,
Good kind thoughts, but problematic. The forum is taking place after store closing hours, much of the reason for the RSVP. The only ones allowed into the building will be those on the list as I understand it. If there is shopping to do, you may want to get there early, as the registers and so forth will probably be closed down. It is not necessary that you speak to the crowd if you attend. You are welcomed to come and simply listen to the conversations and get a better feeling of how a few of representatives feel about the issue. |

The idea of this event is to inform these political leaders
on how, when and why these season's are allocated and set. To let them know that sportfishing is VERY important to the people in their districts. Both in economics and in pleasure. These political leaders are NOT fighting against us , they are just not up to date on the issues. What I want is our political champion's for our cause. The commercial side has had very successful champions. We have not. We HAVE to have our leaders push these issues for us, or we WILL be left holding the bag. We have to make it clear that we want and expect these leaders to speak out for their local people, and get full seasons on the Columbia and its tribs. This is purely an event to let these leaders know what their constituents want. These political leaders have hugh numbers of sportfisherman, as well as sportfishing businesses in their districts. As far as RSVP, we want the sportfishing public their and have a limited amount of space. If you plan on coming at all, to talk or not, please RSVP. The store will close to business at 6:00pm. Not that I don't want you to shop, but if you do want to you will have to come early. We can't have the shopping and this event going on at the same time, it would be cahos this time of year. Thanks for your interest, Dan Grogan - President- Fisherman's Marine & Outdoor |

You are a leader and (sorry) and elder statesmen on these issues , your presence carries some weight and truly will be missed. Your understanding of the commercials and your rational sense of the economies and the businesses dependent on this fishery would have been very useful in presenting a wide unified constituency on this issue in support of the sport-fishermen and sport- women. Best salmon related meeting I've seen to date. Very well spoken and thought out testimoney by many. If this is not a wakeup call to Salem, then nothing will work. Great to see so many concerned sportfishers laying it on the line ![]() The guide community was well represented ![]() My guess is 200 in attendence. salmon hugger

OUTSTANDING meeting. The testimony was exemplary. The speakers clearly made their points regarding how detrimental the current Columbia River management is to recreational fishing and the economy it sustains. How the fishery is being managed for only a fraction of its economic potential.
Great facts too. Like how when it come to jobs, just North River boats with a payroll of 300, has nearly four times the employees as there are active Oregon gillnetters (about 85). A huge thanks to Dan Grogan, President of Fisherman's Marine Supply and NSIA for organizing this event. The legislators heard loud and clear that the status quo doesn't work and the general fishing public along with the businesses they support are looking to the legislature for their involvement.

Ditto to what garyK said.
Now would be a good time to start to contact these Reps. again. Let them know from those that did not speak. Let them know how involved and concerned the sport fishing people are on these issues of allocations and full seasons of fishing. BCF

I was there as well. Very impressed with the info submitted. It is a great start and now we must keep the ball rolling!! The Pac-Fund (Tax credit up to $50 donation) to NSIA is a super idea and a way to help put some strength into our position and support for lobbying the legislature! If you weren't there, check into donating!! I feel some very positive things as a result of this.

I thought it was a great meeting as well. My hats off to Trey Carscadan (sorry SP) Carmen McDonald and Lance Fisher. You guys did a great job. No offense to others who spoke you were all great. Not to forget North River boats and Brian's generous offer.
Great Job everyone.

I thought it was a great turn out and good info was presented to the legislators. Hopefully someday we'll have the opportunity to give a concerted message in a similar forum to the ODFW commission members themselves.
It's good to see that there is some steam building among sport fisherman in the last few months.
